So I think I just lost a HD

Hey everybody. Alright so I was transfering some data between one external HD to my other one when I got an I/O error. I ended the transfer but now I cannot even connect the HD to my comp. It no longer comes up in the Explorer and does not seem to be doing much. It loads for a second, stops, then loads, then stops. Its an IDE drive if that helps any. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Does it show up in your BIOS

Edit: What one of your HD don't work? The external or internal. I assume its your internal because you said its IDE, but externals can be IDE as well in a enclosure.

Sorry for the lack of info guys. Its an external HD that is having the issues. I plugged another HD into the enclosure and it worked fine. I remember having this issue before, however, and somehow got it to work. I'm about to run spinrite on it now and see whats up.

Edit: Yes, tried the enclosure on another comp and same problem.

Are you using Vista? I don't have any way of proving or disproving whether Vista was at fault, but I had the same thing happen with an SD card while using Vista. I'd used the drive a few times before so I know it worked, but I got en error while copying files, and since then no computer will detect it when I plug it in.

Well you could go and make sure you have a drive letter assigned to it. I know this happened to me once with a external. I know its in administrative tools somewhere and it varies on what OS you have.

Alright so I attempted to run spinrite and it was giving me a recovery time of 700+ hours. Not sure if I was doing something wrong since I dont really have the time right now to really work with it. On a side note, Im in the device manager and the drive popped up and is listed as working normally, however, I still cannot even open any explorer window to view the drive. The auto play window popped up with the flashlight and whatnot like it normally would, only to dissappear about a minute later.
On another side note: just by listening to the drive, it would sound as if the arm cannot read for more than a second or so. The platter is spinning but its almost loading in short bursts so to speak.

This ****ing sucks. I've never had a drive fail on me until now, and of course it has to be one of my most important ones. I just had it going in spinrite once again using another option. It gave me a nice time of 3000+ hours remaining. ****ing fantastic. Thanks for the help guys. Ill try it again in the morning.
