Vista and Windows media player. Changing file associations.

Thread Starter
I listen to music on my computer...ripped all my CD's with lame over the past couple years, and I switched to vista ultimate x64 a couple months ago.\\

Ever since I got this OS, i've been trying to get winamp to play .mp3's...It'll play, but it seems to be impossible to change the file associations to winamp. I can go in and change them, but WMP still owns them.

Is there a way to stop this? I also don't really like how WMP constantly runs in the background...with the ability to play anything without me having any idea (as all programs i see are closed)

All i ask for is simple: double click .mp3, winamp opens and plays. Not the song starting to play without me seeing anything go on. Is this possible on Vista? Or should I go out and get a third copy of vista...Business this time?

Try this: right click on an .mp3 and choose prorepties, then choose winamp to open it my default.
Also, download ccleaner and uncheck anything that is wmp assosiated in the start up tab, that will stop wmp from running in the background as you say.

Click on Start and then click on Default Programs

Click on "Associate a file type or protocol with a program"

Scroll down to the file types you want to change (it may take a few seconds to load up). This is the way I changed mine. Even opening WinAmp as admin wouldn't change the file associations.
