Santa Clara (CA) - Intel published the findings of a recent survey conducted on 2,119 Americans aged 18 and over. When asked question regarding the significance of daily Internet access in their lives, 65% of respondents said they could not live without daily access. 71% said it was important or very important to have Internet-enabled devices (95% said it was "somewhat important"). And the big one: A stunning 46% of women and 30% of men aged 18-34 said they would rather go without sex for two weeks rather than lose daily Internet access for the same period of time. Those numbers also increase slightly with age.

While overall 46% of women and 30% of men aged 18-34 said they would rather go without sex for two weeks than the Internet for two weeks, 49% of women aged 18-34 and 52% of women aged 35-44, and 39% of men aged 35-44 also would choose Internet over sex for two weeks.

Saving money, TV and gym

84% said they had saved money by comparing prices online before going to a retail store and buying a product. 66% said they have saved money by just shopping online and ordering it there. And 65% said the Internet has helped them save money by allowing coupon searches, special discounts or promotions.

When asked to rate discretionary activities on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being completely expendable, 5 being cannot live without it), 65% of respondents could not live without Internet access. This compares to 39% who could not live without Cable TV, 20% who could not live without dining out, 18% who could not live without shopping for clothes and 10% who could not live without their gym membership.

When asked if they would rather lose TV access for two weeks, rather than Internet access for ONE week, on average 58% said they would rather lose TV. This breaks down to 67% of 18-34 adults, 57% of 35-44 adults, and 52% of 45+ adults.

When asked if life was better because of the Internet? 91% said yes. 78% said it's because they can stay in touch with friends. 68% said they can shop more effectively. 47% said they can manage their finances better due to online banking services.

Intel does warn that there is no way to compute a theoretical sampling error on this finding. However, it does have precedence.

European findings

A similar survey of 5,148 respondents was also recently conducted in Europe. That survey showed 77% could not live without daily Internet access. This compared to control questions like, 54% saying they could not live without a car and 61% saying they could not live without a washing machine.
