AMD Phenom II X4 Processor launch date and Processor Information

Introduction to Phenom II X4 and Expected launch date of AMD Phenom II Processors

We received news that the expected launch date of the AMD Phenom II processors would be Jan 8 , 2009. Although it is a launch, retail products won't be available till Feb 4, 2009. Pre-orders should take place in from Jan 8 onwards.

The first two models that will appear would be model 920 and model 940. Both are 45nm and code named "Deneb".

Model 920 is rated 2.8GHz (14x200) and is a Quad Core processor. It has a HT link of 1.8GHz. It will have 256KB L1, 2M L2 and 6M L3 cache. 125W

Model 940 is also quad core and is rated at 3GHz (15x200). it also has a HT Link of 1.8GHz, 256KB L1, 2M L2 and 6M L3 cache.

Some e-retails have already published their recommended pricing on their websites. It is priced at 187 quid, probably a good pricing for a 2.8GHz quad core processor.

Testing looks reliable enough, although the presentation of the article is awful at best. For those who don't want to read the whole article:

Quote:
Conclusion

As we can see from the benchmarks, the AMD Phenom II X4 940 seems like a pretty OK processor for pairing up with the ASRock AOD790GX/128M mainboard. In terms of cost/performance ratio, it is definitely more worth your penny than getting a Core i7 which is faster. In fact, the QX9770 compared is not widely available and cost a bomb.

Of course, you might argue that you could overclock a Intel Quad Core processor to 3GHz. There is no doubt you can do that. IN this test, we are interested in default CLK comparisons, comparing the higher end processors at default clocks.

The AMD Phenom II X4 overclocks by 26% which is a 800MHz from the default 3GHz on AIR COOL. It is reported that this processor can do 6GHz under LN2. Of course, that remains a not practical solution as no one will want to place a LN2 tank at home and run the system for 1 hr per tank other than competing for world records.

In conclusion, this processor should be able to take good advantage of the ASRock AOD790GX/128M as this board opens a lot more opportunities than just using the embedded graphics. You can use Hybrid or even run a proper CrossFire solution on it with 2 ATI cards.
They also mention it could hit 4.0ghz on air on the page before, but it seems like they didn't perform the benchmarks at this speed.

Quote:
In our tests, the Phenom II X4 940 (3GHz) is overclockable to 4GHz by AIR with the use of the AMD overclocking tool or ASRock OC Tuner, the stable condition where most benchmarks will complete is 3.8GHz. In fact, a 800MHz overclock can be achieve using two ways. One, is by using a higher multiplier x 200 (e.g 200x19). Alternatively, we can run it at 15 x 253MHz.
Seems like hitting 3.8ghz is a simple matter of raising the multi, and should not be difficult under air conditions at all. Presumably, people who invest more time and are not limited by factors such as the mobo would hit 4.0GHz and beyond (although probably not much more).

The thing that irks me slightly is that they didn't really seem to conduct the benchmarks with an open mind; while I don't question their numbers, they have several comments such as:
Quote:
'It is not surprising that AMD is still unable to keep up when it comes to data crunching.'
the TLDR veresion: Phenom II seems to OC well, performs roughly on par with i7 or slightly behind for the gaming tests they did. Good value for money, at least for gamers, as it costs less than both the intel alternatives posted. Gets beaten in media/number crunching applications.

What would really interest me now actually is any benchmarks using the 'dragon' platform, using amd fusion. The only problem I see is that the fusion program/setup is gpu and mobo dependant, and thus should not be used to compare the cpu alone. But for real world purposes, the numbers would be nice.

Oh yeah btw, for those crysis bench fans, it does win out in crysis over the i7 in their tests. Then again, the QX9770 beats both in a game I believe, and they are genreally all very close to each other with a gpu bound in one gaming test.

I would like to see some multi-GPU tests done...running those games @ 1600x1200 on 1 4850 will not show the cpu's power.

There are some discrepancies with OCW's marks, though.

Vantage OC scaling seems horrendous, 06 OCed CPU score sucks compared to Tom's, and such...

Grain of salt on this (should've said that in my previous article, but it's not too late to say it now)

Look pretty good. It's impossible to do direct comparisons since these Phenom IIs only support DDR2 but still not bad. Article is hard to read for sure and is missing some pictures. I am really looking forward to the real Phonom II on the AM3 Dragon platform though

As always, we'll have to wait for NDA to lift for a clearer idea on how well they perform. Once many reputable sources using a wide variety of mobos/configurations start posting benchmarks, then we'll know. But it's always interesting to see early tests, and it keeps the community interested. +rep for the find btw.
