[CNET]New York considers taxing iTunes downloads - Page 6

Think of it this way, when you purchase for example windows vista. The tax you pay on your $150 purchase is for what? A dvd and some plastic packaging?

You are paying tax on intellectual property.

I don't see the issue with taxing music downloads. Musicians pay income tax on revenue generated through itunes sales so why shouldn't the product they are selling be taxed like all other products?
Well yeah, those musicians are profiting (in theory, we all know how scummy record companies are) majorly. Consumers are already paying for their product, not making a dime, already shelling out THEIR dimes for it.

Our Government has made you believe and feel that its ok to tax you, think back to colonial america, just at the turn of the revolution. Our country was founded against the very things we do today, petty taxes for stupid things. Essentially as a country we have become what we strived so hard to get away from centuries ago.

When someone feels that taxation is ok and just, then the government has done there job by making you feel like you need to do so, you should do so, and that you are a good citizen if you do so.

Its not the singular taxation of one individual thing I speak of but the collective whole of things our government, federal, state, and local, choose to tax.

Lets not get into politics on this

Plus I'm a Canadian. Our taxes are much higher than the US. We grumble a bit but the reality is that it drives our standard of living, free health care, high educational standards... etc.

im trying to state my opinion with using the least amount of politics possible, I dont mean to come off as political and I apoligize if I do. It just seems that since David Paterson has been in office all these ridiculous bills have been becoming law.

That's just not true. I'm not a historian by any means, but grade school history tells you that the Revolution was not because we were taxed, period; it was because we were taxed without a voice in the matter. Taxation without representation, and all that jazz. This may be an oversimplification, but that recent John Adams miniseries seems to lend credence to my this simple interpretation.

Well, we are represented today...by those lovely ladies and gents that we vote into various levels of public office. Now one could make an argument that we are not well represented of course, given the level of corruption, lobbying, and cronyism that seems to take place in certain government halls, but that's a different argument.

Not to add to a political turn to this, but honestly this is the EXACT reason the country revolted against the British. Does anyone in America feel that their government representative, be it Senator, Representative, Governor or President, TRULY represents their interests? I don't remember getting free health care and a $100,000+ salary for working 4 months a year.

Let me know if this is too political, I'll edit.

Glad I don't live in NY... (not that I use Itunes either, but this is just the beginning. Soon we'll see Steam tax )
A very good point, never thought of that.
To further your argument, do you not already pay taxes for your internet?

I totally pay tax on my purchases from Amazon.com. You're thinking of Newegg. This is really just another reason for me to get the **** out of NY asap.

* sigh * It's NOT a good point, it's a terrible strawman. I invite you to read the rest of the thread to see why.
