[CNET]New York considers taxing iTunes downloads - Page 9

Ive never used I-tunes, never plan on using I-tunes and wouldnt bother even trying I-tunes. If I want music I will buy it from the store and rip it to my hard drive. If I dont want to buy it ill just borrow it from a friend and share it the old fashioned way. Personally I think that all taxation on I-tunes will do is decrease profits for I-tunes do to increased prices.

Fair enough. But for iPod owners, the iTunes store really is the ultimate in making shopping easy. Not so much if you're using a different MP3 player, obviously.

Well let's be careful about the words we use. The price of the song isn't increasing at all, it is just being taxed. While that may increase the final cost to a purchase, the price is still the same.

You're probably right that iTunes sales might drop a little, but only very little. But for residents of NY, iTUnes is being put on a competitive even footing with local retailers. That's actually kind of a good thing for NY, takes away any unfair competitive sales tax advantage that iTunes might have over your local shop.
