9800GTX+ Insufficiant power problem!

Thread Starter
Hello everyone.
Yesterday I received most of the new components i need to build my new pc, I got:

1x Asus P5K Premium
1x XFX 9800GTX+
1x Coolermaster Real Power 850W PSU
1x Coolermaster 690 Dominator case
1x Zalman Aero LED heatsink

From one of my old rigs, i took out:

1x Pentium 4 541 3.2GHz processor
2x Corsair XMS2 DDR2 PC-5300 1GB memory
1 x 500GB seagate sata hdd

I put everything together and turned it on and all was good, I installed Windows Xp X64 then all the nessicary drivers. I downloaded Rivatuner so i could change the fan speed of my 9800GTX but when it was building the database i was told my card wasnt recieving sufficiant power! I then checked in GPU-Z and saw that i was getting 400Mhz Clock, 400 Memory and 610 Shaders. I would of thought that with the 850w psu it should have more than enough power. The PSU has 2x 6pin PCI-e modular connectors and 2x 8pin. I connected both of the 6pin's to the 9800GTX so i have no clue whats going on?

Can anyone help me with this cause im really confused!

(btw, ive ordered a Intel E8400 and 2x2gb of corsair dominator 1066MHz RAM but still waiting for them to arrive)

cheers for any help

Matt

Woah, hang on a second. I just rebooted after some updates were installed then it BSoD'd after the BIOS screen. I opened up GPU-Z and i was getting all of the normal speeds. 720 clock, 1100 mem, 1800 shaders. Would it appear that everything is working okay now? It seems rather strange. And yes Enyalius, I do have a test meter i could use to check voltages but maybe i should just see how things go at the moment.

Hey, it's completely up to you. If you want to start small, check the voltages in your BIOS to see if everything else is ok at the moment.

Also, just because you're getting the correct readings in GPU-z does not mean that it getting all the power it requires to maintain those speeds under heavier loads.

Okay, I just did a 3Dmark06 test and i got 5450 3dmarks. I know my CPU/Memory is letting me down but surely it shouldnt be that low should it? Is there still something dodgy with the 9800GTX? Im still a little confused!

Do you have another PSU to give that a try? I wouldn't suggest buying a CoolerMaster PSU, but that's just me...

Yes, your marks are low since the 3DMark06 is CPU intensive.

Not sure why you'd install the OS and go to all these problems when you're expecting a new speedy CPU and RAM in a few days, since the problems you're experiencing now (if any anymore) should certainly vanish with a new and fast CPU and RAM!

Edit; I have the CoolerMaster Real Power 750W and I run my two 8800GT in SLI with no prob and as a matter of fact I use RivaTuner to overclock and set fan profiles on my GPUs and never gotten that error. It seems that this error was just a glitch since your card clocks are getting read ok. Uninstall RivaTuner and reinstall and see if it gives you that error again.

Your PSU is new and chances that it is defective, knowing that it is from a good name company is rare.

Has anyone thought that maybe it is not just his PSU, and that maybe the card is faulty? Try a new/different PSU and such and if that doesn't work and it still gives you that message I think it may be a possibility that you recieved a faulty card and that it may be something internally wrong with the card causing it to think that its not getting enough power.

try this even though it may seem obvious (I have had the same problem).

Make sure all your power connections are plugged in tightly and correctly.
