Because CUDA only works on NVIDIA hardware. OpenCL works on all hardware across Linux, Win, and OSX. Open standards FTW.

Agreed. All this buzz, shame it didn't work properly.
gpu acceleration is supported on a few format conversions only afaik.with time they would get much better and support other formats too.
