Core I7 Questions

Thread Starter
Hi, thinking of making a new system in the new year. This system would have to last a minimum of two years.

THE REAL QUESTIONS:

Reading a review on toms hardware website,is it true that The I7's do not OC well or as well as they could in Overclocking because it has speed protection.

Is it A LOT better in peoples opinions?

Post some of those benches, let me hear how well your system does with the new Core I7 in action. I generally don't trust many reviewers (or people ) so some proof of what you guys have got would be nice.

The Core i7 overclocks extremely well. You can turn that feature off letting you overclock to that chips content.

My 920 is @ 3.8Ghz which is an awesome overclock. Many people get it to 4Ghz.

So core i7 rocks imo.

i7s overclocks fine, just that we do not know the true voltage limit.
many will hit 3.8 - 4.2 on air, but keep in mind that temperature WILL be an issue as the heat it produces is a lot more than the older Quads.

Even with the TRUE will hit high temps:

I'd like to piggyback on the original OP, if I may...so the i7s DO overclock? I had understood that the FSB, as well as the multiplier, was locked in some way. Not so? Same techniques as my q6600/780i - raise FSB, adjusting voltage as needed (yes, this is a very simplified version of the process)?

there is no such thing as FSB anymore (unless you mean the russian secret service )

They use something new, maybe an i7 owner could help.

But in short, they do overclock.

FSB is replaced by something called the QPI(Quickpath interconnect). Because the ram and cpu are connected. That is how I understood it. You mainly use the BCLK to overclock.

Mine is at the same with an ultima-90, I just crank on the Turbo Boost and I'm at 4GHz. Fantastic overclocker and great performance. Plus the flexibility of the motherboards (CFX or SLI) is an attractive feature.
