Which card?

Thread Starter
I'm getting annoyed with this old OEM XtremeMusic. I hate the software and card, constant static.

I listen to a lot of music, mainly 320kb/s MP3's, so high, but not extreme! I also play some games, mainly CoD, GRID and BF2. I use Logitech Z-2300's and Sennheiser PC151's. Which card would suit me best.

I was contemplating X-Fi Prelude or Xonar DX. Does the prelude have different software to the Creative cards? Does the Xonar fully support EAX?

Cheers

I don't mean to bump too quickly, but i need to pull the trigger in the next hour or so.

I'm thinking Asus Xonar DX, how well does it perform in games?

Get the X-Fi Gamer. Its 96 bit, works with games and music. Very crisp. It wont cost you an arm and leg and you can buy something else with them money you save.

No, it doesn't. If you're running Vista though, that won't matter. Anyways, just from personal experience with the Auzentech, I have to recommend it. It's a very nice card and definitely a step up from my Creatives.

Edit: To the poster above me, The XtremeGamer doesn't offer anything above his current card. In fact, I'd choose the XtremeMusic over the XtremeGamer.

I'm really disliking anything Creative at the moment, i just can't get the right quality of music at the moment. I always have a small amount of static through the tweeters when there is a bass beat and sometimes sounds feel washed out and faded. Not what i like

Why do you say EAX support doesn't matter in vista?

Finally, the DX is PCI-E 1x, it will work in a standard 16x PCI-E slot?

Something about not fully supporting EAX. That's why ALchemy was available. Not too sure on the details.

Yes it will fit in a 16x PCI-e slot.

Vista's directsound does not work directly with the hardware to produce EAX 5.0. You have to download alchemy and rig it to work with each game through specific steps. I tried w/ extrememusic and every game had an echo in the voice.

However, the xonar's gx 2.0 software is supposed to give the equivalent amount of sounds as EAX and is supposed to have much the same functionality. It is very very slightly inferior to EAX in just a few games - and you don't have to configure anything special.

??? no (EDIT) above poster seems to think so. I hadn't heard of it before.
pci-e 1x slots are the smallest slots you see.

if you want, just order the xonar d1 - it's pci (normal pci slots, often have more of them available and further away from the gpu cooler fan) and doesn't require the floppy drive power connector to be plugged in like the dx does.

Yes, but a PCI-E 1x slot will fit into a 16x slot. I remember hearing that will work.

Okay, well, i think i'll pull the trigger on the DX

Final question. Will there be an increase in quality of music over the XtremeMusic?

I can't answer that, but I can tell you that the Auzentech Prelude is a very noticeable improvement over the Creatives. I'm glad I upgraded Comp #1 to a Prelude because games seem more involving and the music sounds more natural. Nothing wrong with your current card, but if you simply want better, I can assure you that the Auzentech is a step up.
