Old system Problem please help

Can someone on here please tell me how to speed up my old system. The mother board is a Asus P4P800 I think, Pentium 4 CPU 2.66 Ghz, 3 Gigs of memory, 80 gig hard drive, video card is a GeForce FX5500. I just put in 2 gig of memory and tell you the truth I see no difference at all, I have tried over clocking and that helps a little but then after about a hour it starts freezing up and then I set it back to 2.66.
Is there anything that can be done to this heap?
Thanks everyone.

Are the memory modules you just added the same as the ones you were using before? I doubt it since you currently have 3GB in there. It sounds to me like you overclocked too far if your PC is freezing on you. I would say that you need to get CPU-Z and Core Temp and when you boot up, monitor your temperatures after you overclock. If you ever get into the high 60'sC range, you're in danger of frying something. Old Pentiums usually OC very well, I'd say that it's a combination of a poor board, not enough cooling (might need a new heatsink/fan) and a bad combination of RAM. Good luck!

Hello there the new memory I just got one is exactly the same as the one I have always had in the system, now the other is a different brand.
Im not sure how good the overclock software is that came with my motherboard but I have tried it and I can get 3.0 out of the 2.66 and that speeds up my system pretty good. But when typing it jumps, so I set it back a little. Just installed a brand new cpu fam with copper sink same day I installed the memory. I'll try and find that software you mentioned and see if it helps thank you very much.

It could be the OS, try running some adware/virus removers. That or reinstall windows, if that hasn't been done in a long time. I know all of my older computers get bogged down with system processes and such if I don't clear out the things I don't need.

Also, please fill in your system specs.

Well I tried and it still wont go further than 2.7, heat is stable at only 30 degrees and it just locks up and I have to reboot and start over. Guess its junk so I'll let it be.
Thanks everyone.
