Echo-STAR PSU's

Thread Starter
My trusty Antec decided to accidentally itself. It assploded. There's no hope for fixing it, either. Luckily, it didn't Jihad any of my components, my sig rig still works fine(Posting from it now). All the assploding was on the AC side of the PSU, and it wasn't in the transformer. Lots of sparks, my room still stinks of burnt electronics, but no collateral damage.

I borrowed my mom's Echo-STAR 680W SLI PSU. Now, I know it's no antec, and it isn't gonna last untill the end of Humanity, all I want to know is if itt'l survive till January as an emergency backup. I'm going to pick myself up a reliable Corsair or Antec after X-mas.

Edit: This will probably be the ultimate replacement

680W is a blatant lie for a modern computer. It only is rated for 26A on the 12V which makes it a 400W PSU at best. I can't find much info on it though. My spidey sense says it is a horrible PSU. You can use it if you want but you've been warned. A couple weeks shouldn't be a problem but definitely start searching for a new PSU ASAP.

It will probably run at least till january Test. I shouldn't be to worried. Estimated full load pull on that psu is around 300w+. Use a psu calculator for ease of mind mate.

O, don't worry, as soon as I can find a camera, I'll snap shots of the part of my Antec that assploded...and as seen in the OP, I've already selected a reputable PSU to replace this one with.

I'm reading off the sticker here...3.3V = 35A, 5V = 50A, 12V = 26A.

And no, this isn't a 24/7 supply. It's an emergency backup for when my 24/7 one accidentally itself.

For ya'll's info, the short happened on a mystery 8-pin IC on the AC side. It's now a 7-pin, and every part within about one square inch is scorched and burnt. It showered my case, mobo and GPU with sparks for a good three or four seconds and my room still hasn't aired out nearly 12 hours later. It's fubar. :\\

Yeah that's an older style PSU... Back when PC's needed most of their power on the 3.3 and the 5v rails.
For your sig rig it should be fine

Hark, for I bring pix in all their HUGENESS! Small monitor/56K beware...lol.

Straight-down on the IC that failed. It's susposed to have 8 pins and some sort of identification sticker...it doesn't anymore.

That hole is susposed to have a pin in it. This pin no longer exsists, I'm sure.
