Future Update Recommendation

Thread Starter
Hi fellow OCNers! I'm planning to upgrade my rig this holiday season but I don't know which one of 3 following upgades is the most critical for my sig rig?

NEW: CPU
GPU
MOBO
HDD

1) Let's say I decide to get a new quad core CPU, it would definately be a 45nm one. Please recommend a chip that would be a good deal with high OC potential. Will my Striker Extreme be good enough for a 45nm C2Q or should I get another mobo first?

2) Now if I get, let's say, GTX280 or GTX295() will this be a good upgrade if the 200 series GPUs are PCIe 2.0 and my mobo only supports PCIe 1.0? Is it worth spending that kind of money when I woulnt be using a full potential of that card?

3) If you help me decide and I get a new mobo, which one would I get?

4) And a lil less important, HDD. What do you think about VelociRaptors? Waste of money or definite performance improvement?

Thanks, Russkiy

I'd say upgrade your GPU, maybe wait for a GTX 285, I think the single GPU cards use less PCI-e bandwidth than a 'X2' style card such as a GTX295 so maybe best to keep away from the dual GPU cards with your PCI-e 1.0 motherboard.

Definitely the GPU. Even a 9600GT is better than what you have. I say upgrade to a GTX260 216. The PCI-e 1.0 won't make too much of a difference.

hmm... I thought GTX295 will be a single 45nm GPU with paired ram from 2 GTX260's ?

im not totally sure but i think the gtx295 is basically a GTX260X2 and the GTX285 is just a die-shrink GTX 280, here's a link to some specs..Link

Not really. The GTX295 has twice the shader count of the GTX280 and twice the memory and bus width of the GTX260. So its kind of like in between GTX260 SLI and GTX280 SLI.
