Your suggestion that a speaker system is a "joke" because of the label applied to it makes zero sense to me. Just as I can find you cheapo "computer" speaker systems I can also find a bounty of junk "home theater" systems that also sound like rubbish. Similarly, there are products from both categories that sound very nice.
I do have a "home" audio setup - An E-Mu 0404 DAC and/or a Revox B225 CDP feeding balanced into a Samson S700 power amp, which drives a pair of Sansui SP-3000 towers and a Polk PSW10 subwoofer. Yes, it sounds a lot better than my computer speakers (Klipsch ProMedia 2.0s and the PSW10, still fed by the 0404). However, the computer system is very listenable and far from what I'd consider a joke - it also makes a lot less heat and uses a lot less power than the big rig.
There are different applications where different types of systems are appropriate. To make a blatant generalization that dismisses one of them as worthless is not a wise decision, I think.
I agree with Chip
I have a mid/low end home theater set up but I have lots of friends with pc speakers. What i have is a 5.1 onkyo reciever, pair of philips bookshelf speakers for the front, crapy speakers that came with the reciever in back, and center, and a KLH 10" 100 watt active sub. All of that stuff was either free from people who just abandoned it or really cheap on sale and yes it is better than pc speakers, mind you it still cost probably as much or a little more than z-5500's total. I have heard plenty of computer speaker and they may not be on the same level but they are also not in the same price range. Also for most people who dont have a sound card an just use wmp for playing music....i doubt they notice...
My bargain basement HT system may beat em but its not THAT much better than the z-5500's...
EDIT: now that I think of it, it was probably about $350 total which is definitely more than 5500'sEdited by kingsnake2 - 12/19/08 at 2:57pm
