Ok look, you all might hold a vendetta against NrGx from previous posts, but from the looks of this thread, a few of you are just throwing words into his mouth. He is not anti-folding by any means, and what he is saying is fairly simple to understand. Fold because it's the right thing to do, not because you're scared of contracting a disease that could be cured by folding, hence the self-serving interest.

OP:
This is, however, a very good response to many of the negative views towards Folding@Home. Thanks for the info

Any reason is a good reason to fold.
Including "self-serving" ones.

I beg to differ. Is donating to a charity because you might become impoverished at a future date a good thing? Maybe, but for all of the wrong reasons. By the same token, if you are donating to a charity, you should be doing it because you want to help others, not yourself.

So, helping yourself is a bad thing?

No, but not being able to take an idea and look at it objectively is.

Look, you seem to be confusing two things as if they are one. You are taking the idea of "helping yourself" and using it in a sense that is much too light.

I was talking about a self-serving interest as it pertains to folding@home. You might look at this idea and say, "but you are still helping people whether you like it or not." And while that is true, it is not necessarily referring to the same concept that was stated.

All that was trying to be stated was that the idea in itself is "helping yourself" because you are doing it only for you and not because you want to help advance the research of folding@home so that it may benefit others.

This idea of "helping yourself" is in that way, selfish. As opposed to helping yourself to say, some cake. Which is a lie by the way.

I'm not confusing anything, nor am I taking the moral high ground regarding whether someone should fold and/or questioning their reason for doing so.
If I choose to fold for no other reason than "for myself", it is not for the wrong reason as suggested above.

It was never my point to prove to anyone whether any reason is wrong over another. The only reason I posted in this thread was due to the excessive nagging over an individual who shared a different idea that some others.

Bottom line: There is a two way street to everything. If someone doesn't share your idea, why flame them? Just move on.

If that is the case then why did you post this?
