Wait for Deneb?

Thread Starter
Hi all.

Okay. I have my 6400+ in a locked HP motherboard. I can't overclock. a Deneb won;t work in this thing, as it is not AM2+. It is only AM2.

My proposal is that I buy a AM2+ mobo now. Transfer my RAM, HDD, and CPU over, as my 6400+ should work in an AM2+ mobo right? I think it does.

Moving to the larger form factor of ATX would allow me to use my 4870x2, which doesn't fir on my current motherboard unless I unplug the SATA cable to my disc drive.

Could also OC my 6400+ to... hopefully 3.5 Ghz? (I know, I know I'll buy a cooler, maybe even liquid)

Here is the all important question:

Would this new setup accommodate a Phenom 2? I'm gonna want one the day it comes out! Will the mobo need a bios update for Phenom 2? Am I going to wish I just waited for a mobo that launched with Phenom 2?

Should I wait for AM3? Or is AM2+ a good enough socket for some time now?

We're not talking cheap mobo either. I want something with Xfire. Yeah, I'm gonna add a 4870 to my 4870x2 for 3 GPU's I call this Crossfire Y.

I would wait a little longer for reviews to come out. See how well the current boards peform with deneb first, and then choose a board that works well with deneb. Your processor will work just fine on a AM2+ board. If you are going to be getting a new board anyway, you might just decide to go to intel. I know, I am talking crazy , but it could be a flop or intel could drop their prices a lot do to competition. Point being, I would wait to see how the market shakes up.

I imagine real-world performance number would come out for AM2+ boards a little faster than with AM3 boards, since everyone generally has an AM2+ board now...why wait for shipping? XD

So, bide thy time.
