DVD drives

Thread Starter
hello guys here....

I have 2 DVD drives and they are both from ASUS, one of them is light scribe, what I want to ask about is that when I surfed the asus website looking at the specification of those 2 drives I found the download section, and here my curiosity pushed me to check it , I found some some firmware to download and here I decided to go through this adventure and I did, and I installed it.

when installing it told me to not to interrupt, and that's what I did, and I got shocked when it told me the phrase FLASHING PROCESSING and here I realized that I might messed up with the drive, since the word FLASH often refers to some thing relative to BIOS , but thank God, after the process has finished nothing got damaged. but at the same time I didn't notice any difference, or it might occur in the background without we pay attention to

so have you got any idea about what that firmware do for the optical drives ?

and on the other hand, as for the light scribe one, I found about 3 firmware files to be downloaded, but this time with some explanation about what role does each one play, the first one was for enhancing the burning quality, the other one was for enhancing the reading and may be writing ( I couldn't recall ) and the last one for some thing relative too, but I didn't download either to install, and decided to ask you first if any has got an idea about what a firmware may add to the optical drives, and as for the light scribe one, do you advise me to install them ??? and if so.... do I have to download then all and install them , or I only have to download the latest firmware file and it will include the previous ones as well without they refer to that ?????

best regards to all

The latest is fine, as it erases the eprom completely when it writes the new. And they are for improved stability, sometimes speed increases, etc...

well thank you.... but you didn't tell me whether I have to install all those firmware as each one is differently described from the others, or the latest one had already included the previous firmware files as well ??

When they list the details for new firmware revisions, the manufacturers simply list the changes/fixes/improvements that were made since the last version.

The DVD drive's firmware is written to an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory) chip within the DVD drive; changing the DVD drive's firmware will in no way effect the motherboard or any other part of the system. If something were to get screwed up with the firmware, you can simply flash a different version to the drive and that overwrites whatever version was on the drive's firmware EEPROM.

FYI, the firmware is the software that controls the drive.

Firmware on dvd burners are used to have better writing capabilities on certain blank dvd media codes. Every manufacturer of blank dvd media uses different media codes and some are better than others. If you want more info go to CDFREAKS.COM and check the ASUS/PIONEER FORUM.

IMHO if the firmware on your dvd burner works with the brands of blank dvd media that you use then there's no reason to upgrade a firmware. Some firmwares will provide better write strategies for different brands of dvd media. If you're using dvd media like TDK, MEMOREX, OFFICE MAX, MAXELL & OFFICE DEPOT they are considered crappy media. Those companies outsource their blank dvd media to companies like CMC & RITEK which use cheap dye. Those discs over time the dye will deteriorate to the point that the files will become corrupted and be unable to rip. The best dvd media to use is TAIYO YUDEN & VERBATIM. TY can be bought from www.rima.com. I'm a dvd whore from videohelp.com AKA "budz"! LOL!
