ATI or nVidia right now...buying on friday, looking to spend $350...$400 MAX if it makes a world of difference.

i am running with an nVidia 8800 GTX 640MB...starting to see the 8800 in the "recommended" requirements listings...time to move on.

what do you all recommend?

for 350, GTX 260 Core 216 and OC the sucker (it nips the heals of the 280 at stock, so why waste an extra 50-100 bucks for 1-3 FPS?

oh man, you could hold off just a bit longer for the GTX 285 55nm. You can wait a little bit right? If not then I would get a GTX 260 core 216 or 4870 1gb.

For $299 you can grab the ATI 4850x2. It beat out the GTX 280 in every test:

I can wait until January 9th. Is the 285 expected to be that big of a leap in performance?

Well if its going to stay competitive with ATI they will have to price it under 350 for sure. Probably 300 or so i guess but i havnt seen any prices yet. It will be a good improvement over the 280 (Mostly when overclocking) and it uses alot less power. Will probably keep up with the 4850x2 and not have to worry about dual GPU.
