Total ram vs. available ram?

Ok... hang tight with me here guys. I either downloaded a cpu-z/everest like program or I dug deep into my windows info. And somewhere along the line it said I had 2 gigs of total ram, and 1.32 gigs of available ram. Where did I see this?! It's driving me nuts.

I have no clue as to where you saw that (*edit* possibly the performance tab of the windows task manager?).... but unless you have onboard video that's eating up your RAM (which you don't)... 2GB "total ram" is probably how much ram you have installed - and 1.32GB "available" is probably how much ram isn't currently in use or your paging file size

Nope... I have a 7600gt, although you might as well call it onboard video. I don't know where I saw it and it's really creeping me out. You don't understand man I am having NIGHTMARES about this I'm going to go order more ram

your computer uses ram while its running, more process = more usage, but that doesnt mean you r running out of ram, its only used when applications r running. when you close applications u free more ram. when u checked it probably told u the amount thats not being used at that moment. and the "ate up" ram is what is being used at that exact moment. so dont worry no ones eating ur ram.

edit: try to delete some of start up programs. it'll help free up more ram and make pc a lil more responsive.

Available ram, I believe, is ram that's available for use. IE not being used to store data.

Example, I have 2 Gigs of ram, windows is using 629 mb. I have 1419mbs of available ram.

kpo6969,
That screenshot only shows the ram installed in the computer. For example, you are running 32 bit Vista with a 512Mb video card. So you are only using approx. 3.5Gb of ram (less I think with Vista). To see how much ram is usable, run the task manager.

MRHANDS,
Whenever you use a beta of a service pack there is always an expiration date. That's why when it goes RTM probably April 2009 you uninstall the beta and install the RTM which has no expiration date.

I know all this. I'm just laughing at the selected date.
