[LegitReviews] Physics Benchmarking - Cryostasis Demo

Today we'll be taking a look at the latest Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason demo from Nvidia. This game is Nvidia's latest poster child and a short demo has been made available because of its heavy integration of the PhysX engine. With the game not even complete, and it won't be available till February 2009, this is just another case of Nvidia thumping its chest for attention. However, since physics acceleration is a major developing technology, we decided to take a look.

Cryostasis is the first game to use the GPU to calculate fluid simulation using smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). Unlike a regular particle system which typically only accounts for collision, SPH computes viscosity and repulsion forces which make the particles splash and puddle as if they were part of a real fluid. Additional PhysX features include tarps, curtains, rag dolls and rigid bodies.

We will be comparing an ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 216-core with both cards using the latest drivers and looking at the differences in performance. In a non-PhysX environment, the Radeon HD 4870 1GB and the GeForce GTX 260 216-core tend to slug it out rather evenly so it'll be interesting to see how things balance out when physics are introduced. We will also be tossing in a GeForce 9600 GT into the mix as a dedicated PhysX card to see if that improves the performance of the benchmark using the GeForce GTX 260 Core 216.

Quote:
Benchmark Results: It was obvious from the second we started benchmarking the ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB graphics card that the CATALYST 8.12 drivers had not been optimized for Cryostasis. Cryostasis is part of NVIDIA's 'The Way It’s Meant to be Played' program and the game isn't due out for a couple of months, so the ATI results don't mean much right now.

With the resolution increased to 1600x1200, and with the same image quality settings, we can see that the dedicated PhysX card didn't make as big of a difference in the system.

It should be noted that we were concerned with the performance numbers on the ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB graphics card and contacted ATI yesterday to get a comment from them about the low performance numbers we were seeing. One of the ATI driver team members replied with an e-mail simply stating this: "I have not heard of this game and not sure if we have it. I would just say we will investigate."

That being said, we have not cleared the air as to why the ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB graphics card didn't perform so well.
*NOTE: Testbed was QX9650 @ 3.2GHz / eVGA 780i / ram unknown

That's so dumb.

Why release a game that includes a technology where even the latest gen ATI tech that only 3% of the gaming pop has get a low OF 4 FPS?!

It's an Nvidia tech demo, nothing more.

I'm not an ATI fanboy (I prefer Nvidia), but seriously, there is no good business logic behind limiting yourself to 50% of the gaming market other than Nvidia pumping money into them, especially when Havok is a generally superior alternative.

Can't wait until openCL takes off and physics can be done on the GPU without having to run the biased Nvidia PhysX code or the biased Intel Havok code (Intel would NEVER port Havok to the GPU, that's why they bought them out, to ensure Havok wouldn't get onto modern GPUs, it's a shame really).

the techdemo looks good on youtube, lets see how good the game will be.

I was just gonna download the demo but I don't think it's worth the 900mb..

You wish that butch lesbians were Bi? Gross, no thanks. I won't be getting with any women who have deeper voices than mine, thankfully.

Edit: Wait, how the hell did this go from being a Physics benchmarking thread to ...conversing about butch lesbians?

Moving away from lesbians and back to the topic.

An NVIDIA optimized game that shows off PhysX. Easiest way for NVIDIA to look awesome... but then again the gains aren't impressive...
