GTX 295 on a VX450 - Page 2

post #11 of 28
The GTX295 has a power rating of 290W. Thats 290W from the 12V rail. That only leaves around 100W to power the CPU and everything else that uses power from the 12V rail. No amount of power saving will allow the 295 to work on the VX450.

kpo6969: I don't think it will struggle with a 4850. A VX450 can handle SLI'd 8800GTs , which pulls around 230W, a 4850 is 150W.

I would go for a 680 watt psu minimum. This thing is gonna be the most power hungry beast nvidia has ever made.

Try anything over 650W+ PSU and should work just fine. Have no idea what brand though...

8800GT should have 22-24amps single card, + 6 to 8 for sli
4850 calls for 30amp minimum for single card the last I saw
I may be wrong?

No way. If you look at that link and go down to the Nvidias own power consumption graph you will see that 450 watts is not gonna work.

kpo6969: Well they use a Core2Extreme X6800 system as their basis for power requirement statements. Also they overstate the requirements to leave a margin of error.

When tech sites review graphics cards theres usually a power consumption section where they measure the consumption directly from the wall outlet. Those are the numbers to follow.

techpowerup.com has the power consumption list of most graphics cards.

PSU's are not created equal.
I understand what you are saying but there is more to consider than wattage.
Amperage (amps) on the 12v rails have to be followed also. That is how psu's are rated and where gpu's and cpu's get their wattage from.

Read this:
http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=205763

There are some 500w psu's that have less amps than my old Dell 305w psu which had 22amps and could run an 8800GT.

Dell 305w @ 22amps

This is a good 500w Earthwatts @ 34amps

Amp rating for a psu = Maximum combined wattage on the combined 12v rails divided by 12 = amp rating for psu

I know the whole amps business man....we're both underestimating each other. I give the same speech^ to PSU noobs.

I = P/V(=12)

4850 => 150W/12V = 12.5A <= for video card only, plus another 120W (10A) for the CPU,fans, etc, whereas they state 30A.

OK, I forgot what my point was, but a 4850 can easily be run on a VX450 and so can a 8800GT SLI setup(given that no quads are involved).

Actually, VX450W is able to deliver over 550W, despite it' rated for 450W.

Biggest problem is lack of connectors, GTX295 requires one 8-pin PCI-E an one 6-pin, and this Corsair has only one 6-pin PCI-E connector. There are two power adaptors delivered with GTX295, but one is 2x6-pin PCIE -> 8-pin PCI-E, and the other is 2xmolex -> 6-pin PCI-E, so it would require extra one 2xmolex -> 6-pin PCI-E adapter to run GTX295 on VX450W.

Power wise, VX450W would probably run GTX295 as long it's not paired with Q6600 at 3600MHz or something like that (), but huge amount of adapters required is scary.

Got an old PSU laying around? Just give the card a dedicated PSU until you upgrade.
