Core i7 965 Temps on stock cooler?

Hi Guys,

I don't actually have one of these but my friend just spent an insane amount of money on a new system with one of these.

He says he's going to wait till more coolers come out for overclocking.

I was wondering since I'm helping him set it up, what temps would you get with the 965 xe on the stock cooler at stock clocks?

I'm most interested in load temperatures. It's hard to find this info around. If they are high I will more than likely undervolt him for the time being. He'll blame me if it dies (even though he's too tight to get an aftermarket cooler for the time being after spending all that money).

Thanks for all replies!

Uh all that money and using a stock cooler? He should really just buy a TRUE or even that noctua cooler. If hes trying to get even lower temps than that he should just go water.

This guy is very strange with money, he tells ya he has no money to do anything and then all of a sudden he'd go on a spending spree. He's the fellah who lags back when in the pub so he doesn't have to buy everyone a round.

This review had the i7 965 hitting 85C on stock volts and clocks using the intel heatsink . So freaking hot even with a TRUE, unfortunately intel's thermal rating for the i7 is missing from their site..... so who knows how hot they can safely run.http://vr-zone.com/articles/lga1366-....html?doc=6237

Damn that is hot. I better undervolt it as best I can, it'll be interesting to see how low I can go as I haven't had the chance to mess around with the i7 yet.

I seen it stated on another forum that
Quote:
Tcase_Max (max temperature at the geometric centre of the topside of the IHS) at 67.9°C.
http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=63069

I don't think undervolting will get me that low given the figures in the above graph.

I wonder was this an early test? The 965 is supposed to have a slightly different (more efficient) HSF from the non-extreme models I think, I'm hoping maybe they just used the one from the 940/920.

EDIT: Default voltage mentioned in that article is quite high 1.325. So maybe I could bring it back a good bit. Fingers crossed.

EDIT2: I love this quote from Intel.

This fan has to work in a variety of operating conditions so it had to be designed in such a way that it would cool the processor when running at its maximum power at any given ambient temperature (up to 38°C). In normal operating environments the processor rarely reaches its maximum power rating.

Not very likely

I would recommend a new cooler as fast as possible, because if you don't get a better cooling system for your processor. Overheating is not a good thing.

Mine is nowhere near that with the stock Intel cooler - 31C idle, 56C max (Prime w/8 workers). VCore is 1.232 in CPU-Z..

Are you seriously comparing a stock intel air cooler to your water setup?
No. Those numbers are with the stock Intel cooler.

when I was using the stock cooler I had similar temps - slightly higher at load - maybe 60.

this is at stock voltage, no OCing.

one thing I was trying is to keep the stock 3.2G but undervolting - I was able to get stable below the auto settings.
