10k rpm HDD, friend of silence?

Thread Starter
I've heard they're not exactly quiet. If not, any tips on how to keep em quiet?

rubber mounts washers on the screws, with cut down vibration noise
one of those hard drive silencer boxes

i would have thought most of the noise actually comes from the spindle

The spin of the drives is infrequently the culprit for the added noise of "performance" harddrives. It's the motion of the heads which makes all the racket. That said, I too hear (har har) that the velociraptors are very quiet.

Yup... spindle noise is the humming or whooshing sound. Head noise is the clicking, ticking, or screeching sound.
Once again...

People with 40 dB(A) ± 10% fans are discluded.

the velicoraptors are supposed to be quiet. Take a look at SPCR's review . I really really wanted to get one but couldn't afford it so I went the WD 640Gb route for my system drive and I have a Samsung F1 storage drive, as well as a Samsung Ecco 5400k as an external drive to cut down on noise.

I also soft mounted my drives last weekend. Now, I can't hear them except for hard seeks
