Want to upgrade - need help

Hey there.
This is my rig [not great but does what I want]:
a-bit A-N68SV AM2+ Motherboard
500w PSU
AMD Phenom X3 8450 2.1GHz
Maxtor DiamondMax 250GB HD SATAII 8MB Cache
VData 2GB 667MHz DDR2-SDRAM
Windows XP Pro SP3
XFX GeForce 8600GT 512MB

After talking to a few people, I've come to the conclusion that either my CPU or my 8600 is letting me down in some games.
The opinion varies on who I talk to.
Some say CPU some say 8600.

As I'm on a budget, I was hoping upgrading my GPU would be the best way to go. For now anyway.

If so, which Nvidia upgrade would best suit my system?

Thanks in advance.

Its probably your 8600 I have a X3 8650 and it runs great with any games I throw at it even when I was running a single 9600gt it ran games great, but it does look like you should upgrade your ram as well as your GPU

Hiya Vizual,

Well that 8600 just has to go for sure. You could get a 9600gt or a 9800gt depending on your budget.

I would first suggest that you goto the UserCP and enter your system spec so we won't have to keep on asking you, and it would save you from all that typing.

Here is The Egg's dot com list of nVidia 9600gt gpu's or the 9800gt's . As you are on a budget but don't say you highest limit any of these will help your gaming alot. I personally like the evga gpus and with their StepUp program you can upgrade to a better card within the upgrade period

Thanks for the replies.
I've added all the info I have right now about my system without actually peeking in my case to get the specifics.

So my 8600 would be letting me down then?
I was looking at getting a 9600GT but was concerned with power. I've got a 500w PSU, not sure of the brand without looking inside the case.
Does the 9600 require extra power and would a 500w PSU, regardless of brand, be able to supply this?
I do know I have molex connectors inside. If that helps at all.

Thanks again.

It'd really help us to know the brand and amps on the 12V rail(s) of that PSU before we start pontificating on a GPU choice for you.

Edit: But a 9600GT/9800GT would be LIGHT YEARS ahead of that 8600GT.

Agreed.

and a new GPU would be the most beneficial to your rig. you can always OC that CPU a bit higher, even if you can get it to 2.4ghz youd notice a difference.

As I have an 8600gt currently I could let you know if it's the part letting you down since the rest of my rig is alright.

How is it "letting you down?"

(EDIT)
and is it a 256 or a 512?

A 500w psu should do ok but the 9600gt does need a 6pin power connection so I am afraid that you will have to open up your case and see what cables you have. I can tell you that I had a cheaper psu before and it had no trouble with the 9600gt that I still am using on this system. But you won't know until you get out the screwdriver.

Hey again.

@JackArbiter:
I'm receiving comparably low frame rates in a lot of games that have recommended system settings that are below mine currently.
Thats basically it.
Its a 512MB.

@ G-Byte:
I did just that and took the screwdriver out.
My PSU is an EZCool ATX-500 [whatever that means].
Here is the comprehensive list of what I call gibberish on the side of it:

Lead colours with DC and Max output:

Orange: DC-+3.3VDC. Max Output: 28A
Red: DC- +5VDC. Max Output: 30A
White: DC: -5V. Max Output: 0.3A
Yellow: DC: +12VDC. Max Output: 34A
Blue: DC: -12VDC. Max Output: 0.8A
Purple: DC: +5VSB. Max Output: 0.3A
Green: DC: PS-ON. Max Output: Remote
Black: DC: COM. Max Output: Return
Grey: DC: POK. Max Output: PG

I do see a molex connector all taped up near the PSU so I'm guessing thats the thing I need?
If I need a connector does the GPU come with one?

Is that any good?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure on the brand, but 34A is quite enough to slap a 9800GT in there.

Others will have to evaluate the manufacturer, but on sheer amperage you're clear.

Edit: And yes, they will send you a 4-pin molex to PCI-E 6-pin power adapter with the card.
