34A will run a 9800gtx+ pretty solidly but if you are on budget try looking for a 8800gts g92. you can find them for ~$110ish
post #12 of 49
Why go from 8600 to an 8800, no massive difference therem. Thats like going from an i7 920 to a 940 when the 12-Core CPUs are out.

What sort of price range are you looking at?

The 9800GT/GTX/GTX+ would be a good buy although if you are willing to spend £200 ($300) then you could get the XFX GTX 260 Black Edition.

I'm sorry, what?

Proof, from this VERY FORUM.

A 9800GT is going to annihilate his 8600GT. 112 shaders! Come on!

And if his PSU brand is lame, sticking a 9800GTX on there might blow his system. I'm sure he doesn't have the budget to replace EVERYTHING.

If the resolution he's playing at is 1680x1050 or less, a 9800GT is going to do him just fine.

Hey.
I'm looking at around £100 [or less] on a new card.
I'm up in arms though as to which one to get.
I really have NO clue.
As Santa has already stipulated that I've been a naughty boy this year so around £100 is around my budget.

And yeah I'm only on a 17" so I'm not exactly looking at mega huge resolutions right now.

And thanks to all those who have helped me thus far.

Hmm there's a pretty big difference between 8600 and 8800. Just the price range at the time I bought my 86 showed that.

to the OP, not sure what comparably low is and etc., but I get about 30fps on mid-low settings for most brand new games at above 800x600 so if that is your concern then... yeah get a new card.

if you're finding games unplayable at the lowest settings then it's something else.

and it is likely that different parts are working together to screw you even worse than i'm getting screwed. but i knew what I was getting into when I bought it, I'd run out of money and i needed an extra part for my work comp anyway so i'll still get some use out of it when I upgrade (my work comp has a 2400 pro in it, lol).

Ok, so to clear up a few concerns and a few of my gaming habits.

1. I like to play in 1024x768 or above. 800x600 I hate.
2. I wont settle for less than medium settings.
3. Its looking to me that a 9600GT is in my price range however I'm concerned about my PSU after browsing some rather disappointing forums threads on the net.
Can anyone confirm how much stress the 9600GT puts on the PSU?
4. Will a 9600GT be a substantial increase to performance over my 8600GT?

I'm so confused haha.

1. I like to play in 1024x768 or above. 800x600 I hate. - Okay, then you'll want...

2. I wont settle for less than medium settings. - ...at least a 9600GT.

3. Its looking to me that a 9600GT is in my price range however I'm concerned about my PSU after browsing some rather disappointing forums threads on the net. Can anyone confirm how much stress the 9600GT puts on the PSU? - If you have to, buy the PSU, save for the card. The PSU is FIRST AND FOREMOST in priority for any build or upgrade. That said, I was able to run my 9600GT overclocked on a PSU with 25 amps on the 12V rail, but that was with constant monitoring and a weaker processor. If you're worried, buy the PSU FIRST. The 9600GT is pretty power-sippy, but it still needs a 6-pin PCI-E power connector to be stable.

4. Will a 9600GT be a substantial increase to performance over my 8600GT? - Oh god yes.

Thanks a lot for all your help.

Looks like I'll replace my PSU then get the 9600GT.

Thanks again.

What a great way of saying this.

@ Vizual. Go with the 9600gt or a sc/oc'd version if you can. If you are looking to go from that 17" monitor (crt or lcd?) to at least a 20" lcd the 9600 will do you good. If your going to go with a better, 22" lcd, then get a 9800gt. If a much better lcd is in your future you don't want to be held back by the gpu. Most 19" lcds got a resolution of 1440x900 while the next up is 1680x1050. I got a 21.6" Samsung and I had to problem with the 9600gt running the games I do. I don't do Crysis much anymore but it was playable at medium settings.

I just checked the cash exchange rate, your 100 would give me here in Canada $189 or so. You might want to look at the 9800gtx cards, this is for an evga 9800gtx dual slot gpu. With this one you won't have to worry about your gaming again, or for the next year or so depending on the game that is. And it will handle a big lcd too.

Check stores where you are and go with either a bfg or evga, they both got great support, upgrade options and are great cards.
