What are your suggestions on how to go about that?

The usual way, same as always. Prime95, Intel Burn Test, whatever.

OK, so I ran prime95 ("In-place large FFTs") and it ran for about 10 minutes then stopped and gave me this error: "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4" CPU Temps were getting up to 60C. Hmm...

OK, so though my system appeared stable, and I was able to run my typical programs without any noticed problems, I guess the error with Prime95 means it wasn't stable after all...?

From what I read, that error usually refers to the RAM not getting enough voltage - which makes a lot of sense considering my problem. So, is there anyway for me to change that voltage from 1.8 if my BIOS does not have the option? I tried the +5% voltage boost to CPU and I had the same error after Prime95. Can this be changed by software or anything?

Next I tried moving the 333 MHz bus down, but I only changed it to 320MHz. Which gave me "800MHz" as an option again for the DDR frequency. CPUz now tells me my Core speed is 2883MHz, bus speed 320MHz, rated FSB 1280MHz, DRAM frequency 400MHz. Is this acceptable being between the two speeds? I'm at least getting better memory performance scores with this bus over the 266/1066...

I tried the Prime95 stress test again and have no errors thusfar, while the other set up gave me the error in a matter of minutes.

A few things, first you may want to use small FFT first as this mostly tests your CPU. You want to test only 1 component at a time. Get your CPU overclock stable first, then work on your RAM. Otherwise when you run into a problem you have too many variables to worry about.
Second, it seems like you think a vista rating of 5.9 isn't good. Isn't that what you mean in the 1st post? That's the highest you can get.

Sorry you misunderstood me. My computer was getting "only" a 5.5-5.6 for the RAM but I thought my 4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800 should be a 5.9. I ran on a similar system that had 4GB Kingston DDR2-800 and IT got a 5.9. Though I now learned that I guess this is because the 2nd computer has a 333 bus speed and mine is 266 at stock.

I don't completely know what you mean by one at a time. I'm very limited in my BIOS as to what I can change. When I changed by FSB from the default 266 to 333, it automatically changes my DDR option of "800 MHz" to "832 MHz." I think the next lower choice was around 700. I'll note again that it booted fine though, and everything appeared fine like this but I got that 0.5 rounding error in Prime 95.

Now, with my bus currently at 320 MHz, RAM at 800 MHz, timings at 5-5-5-15, and default voltages (1.8v for RAM) I am not getting a Prime95 error so far. Does it make sense to keep the settings here then, or creep up? Or force voltage changes somehow? FWIW, I now get a 5.9 for the RAM score.

Can you get your RAM to run at a 1:1 ratio?
That would be best until you get a stable CPU overclock.
That's what I mean. If CPU is at 333 run your RAM at 333. If it's at 400 FSB, run your RAM there also. That should take your RAM out of the equation so you only test your CPU.
Then after you get that stable then you can work on your RAM overclocking.

You'll probably be stable at 300-320 FSB. The G31 needs a bit of extra voltage to hit 333, and for whatever reason your BIOS doesn't have a NB voltage adjustment. This seems to be common; I've only seen one G31 board where the BIOS did allow for the NB voltage to be changed. And since the G31 tops out at 333 (mine refused to go past 340 no matter what, and I've never heard from anyone who got a G31 past 342 or so) and needs the extra voltage, you'll probably have to bring it back down. The last person I helped with a G31 board also didn't have an NB voltage adjustment, and I think he wound up around 310 or 315.

Yeah, I ended up stuck here at 310 but I'm still tinkering around. I was using blend in 95 for stressing so I guess I should use FFT first and then see if its the CPU or the RAM that's erroring. I just don't get why its running below VID.
