[arstechnica]Windows 7 Beta invites sent out

Thread Starter

PDC attendees got the Windows 7 pre-beta build, and MDC attendees will be getting Windows 7 Beta 1, but what about other Microsoft enthusiasts? Well, Redmond is planning a public beta in early 2009, but beta testers will likely get their hands on a Beta 1 before the public beta (rumor has it that January 5 is the day). This week, Microsoft has started sending out invitations to potential testers who would like to join the "Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 beta program" (I've included an excerpt of the e-mail sent out to testers at the bottom).

After explaining that only those willing to file bug reports and participate should accept the invitation, the e-mail notes that the microsoft.beta.win7.lobby was opened up early in order for testers to "begin renewing acquaintances with previous participants as well as meeting new testing peers." Redmond also asks testers to complete three surveys and notes that every tester who completes them prior to January 1, 2009 will be put into a drawing for "some Windows 7 logo'ed toys" (five winners). I encourage you to read over the information below as it clearly answers questions many have been asking me and other Microsoft bloggers.

What you will get if you choose to participate...

DO WANT very badly, Why cant they just release it soon as possible to people who will use it i dont see the point in releasing it to a few 100/1000 when you can more to properly test it and get better results

invite? we don't need no stinking invite!

i'm using the 6801 pre-beta and loving it, especially with the new blue badge revision that gives me aero peek. it works fine and has already won me over on giving the official a try.

but being an official beta user is good for bragging rights/ultra nerdiness, so i suspect there will be tons of OCnet members lusting after it. to me it's the same as having some rare item in WoW - very few will care you have it.

Sadly those Windows 7 Beta 1 dvd will be most likely be torrented like everything else. I wish I would have known about the MDC being at Orlando on the 11th I would have gone to that. Would have been nice to get a Beta 1 dvd and see what Microsoft is planning oh well.

I tried windows 7 for a few days, and was impressed. It seems nearly complete, now they just need to iron out some of the bugs. It's running fast on todays hardware already, I can't wait to see how much improvement they squeeze out of it in the coming months.

duh, the point is to create as much hype as possible
if you want something, and you can't get it til this date */*/**
then your going to get exited about it (even more when some people have it already but you don't), and when you are finally be able to use it, you will probably buy it the second its released / try the beta

its all about creating interest / hype

i guess so, i guess i just have the attitude that wants to improve software but its all about the money and hype and not being what vista was

True, but at the same time it also gives Microsoft a massive test audience to find bugs I guess. Depends how you look at it really.
