HELP with Flash BIOS for dell using CD

Thread Starter
ok people, I've been stuck on this issue for the past 4 days and It's killin' me. My Aunt is a school teacher and she brought a dell Optiplex GX260 from a school auction. The problem is I can't get windows XP to recognize the d@mn HDD in order to format it and install the OS. I already swapped out the old HDD because it still had old info on it and the XP was password protected (couldn't retrieve it because the school closed). So I snatched the other HDD out and put a new one in now XP is saying that it doesn't see a HDD installed. This BIOS is so screwed (in comparision to retail mobos) that I have no idea as to what to do to change the settings so it will recognize it.

This being the case, I want to flash the BIOS to the most recent version (current version is from 2003, update is 2005). I'm sure the current version is more end-user friendly than the original, especially since it is from a school (the BIOS is most likely configured so that the staff can't F--- nothing up). The problem is I have never flashed a BIOS using CD (I use flash drives) and i don't have clue as to what to do and how to set it up. The mobo is a foxconn L S-36 with and Intel 775 socket. I have googled the situation but the support is limited so I had to come home to OCN and get some answers.

This has been a pain in the the last 4 days. MY mission is to have it up an running before I leave here tonight. I need my OCN brethen to help me with this issue Thanks in advanced!!!

Is there anything preventing you from using a USB stick?

Check the link in my sig.. formats a USB flash drive as a windows 98 bootable floppy with DOS

You should be able to simply select the USB drive to boot by pushing F11 or something at boot to select your boot device.

EDIT: http://bootdisk.com/ has loads of bootable media/programs including CDs.

What part of Houston are you located? I've been to a few School Auctions in the Houston/Pasadena/Deer Park area and my Mother and Father help run quite a few.

If you're anywhere close I could possibly help you out.

Since this computer is so old, I'm leary about using USB flash on it. The current BIOS doesn't even support USB 2.0. I will check into the link though and see if I can pull something outta that on the CD flash. I'm currently using my lappy to help address the issues and I have some utilities on it so I'm hoping I can pull this together. Rip, burn, and Rock & Roll... hopefully

I stay by Greenbriar and Westhiemer , but I'm currently out by Klein/Aldine area. Actually I'm not to far from Fry's. If I can just get the CD flashing process down pat, I can get it (I really wanna do this because I'm a manic for challenges and problems ).

Also Halifax, have you dealt with any of these school PC's BIOS? I mean I don't deal with OEM boards anymore and the only one I have any experience with is HPs. I do know that OEM BIOS are crappy and they are locked but if this was an HP I wouldn't have a problem fixing the BIOS to recogizing HDD but I haven't a clue about dell.

What exactly is the BIOS doing besides not recognizing the HDD?

Have you tried different IDE cables/slots?
