No you need a card that encodes 1080p. A 4350 is powerful when if comes to running a tv.

Ugh, why would you need lots of memory when it takes very little to encode 1080p, its all about the gpu.

REMEMBER a 3200 can do 1080p with a sempron

The 4850 has some good power. It would be able to run a full HD 46" monitor at smooth rates no matter what they would be doing, and would give them some elbow room for other stuff in the future.

I know that this might seem confusing. ATI's HD 4000 series has a lot of variation. Let me lay it down like this:

4350: Lowest end. Good for watching movies....and that's about it. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127390

4550: Good for low-range gaming, better for larger monitors than the 4350 due to more video memory. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125250

4650: More RAM, higher clocks; smoother for anything you do; mid-range gamer/movie/large monitor card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127384

4670: Same as 4650, just a little faster with a higher bit-rate interface.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127383

4830: High mid-range. Great for HD gaming/HD video playback (blu-ray/HDDVD).
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102803

4850: Best Price/performance. Higher mid-range gaming/video card. Good overclocker, will run your monitor nice and smooth. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161235

4870: Gamer card. Can do everything the others do, at an increased memory/bitrate/speed (mhz)/price. Uses GDDR5 memory instead of GDDR3 for better speed. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814161236

4850 X2: They stuck 2 4850s on 1 board. Outruns the 4870 for a very decent price, and still only takes up two slots (some 4850s do that with just one). Still beats the GTX 280 for $300 or less. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102813

4870 X2: Considered the fastest graphics card on the market right now. Faster than a GTX 280, and better than the 4850 X2 (better memory). Two of these will run neck and neck with GTX 280 Tri-SLI. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814129114

Hope this helps. Mind you, this is only on the ATI side of the table.

Can I get some1's help before he gets more bad info from people. Plz you don't need memory if your not running games. People say more memory for larger resolutions because that APPLIES TO GAMES.

All of the 4000 and 3000 series will do just fine and are about the same in terms of HD decoding. The 4350 linked earlier is the best choice right now and it comes with a copy of WoW. Buy the card, sell the game.

The amount of ram it has is entirely irrelevant. Even the Radeon 7000 supports over 1080p resolution.
