The GPU on that doesn't have the capabilities encode 1080p.

Just so you know, its not untill the 8 series or the ATI 2000 series do video cards have 1080p encoding abilities.
1) It's decoding he'd be concerned with, not encoding.
2) The newer GPUs have the ability to offload HD decoding. They are not a requirement for HD playback nor are they a requirement for encoding. The CPU in the OP's rig should be perfectly capable of playing back 1080p content.

valtopps, both of those cards are massive overkill. He's not doing any gaming, why spend 2-3x over what you should on a graphics card?

well i just bought a 3850 512mb 256bit for $55.00 after rebate. to me it a good deal for a good card. yes i could save him $10.00 with a cheap card. but i think this card will last him for a long time. i want to thank you all for you inputs. i hope it works for him now.

jeez people. It doesn't matter how BIG the monitor is, what matters is what RESOLUTION the monitor runs at. A low-end 8 series nvidia is plenty and so is a low end ATI. More than 512mb memory won't make any difference for what he's trying to do with the card.

(good choice by the way.)
