do i wait till the install is done then disable all the crap? or is there a way to disablw as i go? whats a good list other that disableing UAC?

Go to computer properties and from there click on Advanced System Settings. Under performance you will see options. You can try the other settings but the performance setting is probably best for an older notebook.
