Basic server questions, +rep for help

Thread Starter
I am interested in setting up a server. So I have a few questions, and I am a complete noob at this.
Here is what I want to be able to do:
1 - Be able to transfer files to and from the server to my macbook pro and windows vista desktops
2 - Be able to play files from the server without transferring them to the computer they are playing on.
3 - Access the server using a RDP on my macbook pro OR windows desktops
4 - Share a printer

Here are some questions:
1 - Lets say I have a 250gb hdd, 500gb hdd, 1tb hdd and a 160gb hdd. I install the OS and progs on teh 160gb and have the data on the others. When I am accessing the server from my laptop or desktop, will it show each hard drive or will it show everything on one drive/folder type thing.
2 - What OS do you guys recommend that would be easiest for an noob like me.
3 - Any special hardware/tools that I would need that I should probably know about?
4 - Could I host a CS:S server that my friends around the country could play on or does that cost money?

Again, any help is appreciated and will be given +rep.

1. I would imagine that you being the admin would see each drive individually.
2. Why not windows server 2008 you can try it out for free here
3.Hardware? The most heavy duty stuff you can find.
4. You can host a CSS game the only thing thatll cost you money is the internet connection @ the bandwidth youll need it to be at, in order for all your clannies to get good pings.
Hope this helps

If you're sharing files and printers with a Mac then, for your server, Linux will almost always be a better choice than Windows. It's easy enough to set up. You can arrange your drives in any way you want. And yes you can run your own CS:S server on it.

Well if it wasn't for the CS:S server I would definitely recommend Windows Home Server. WHS will give you easy access to all your files, will back up your Windows PCs on a set schedule (or anytime you wish), and will allow you to stream media to all your PCs.

You will also be able to access any of your shares on your WHS server from your MAC. If you are interested, here is how: http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-acc...from-mac-os-x/.

Hope I helped you out a little at least....

1) If you want to see the drives on the network you would have to configure those drives individually for sharing and then map those drives from your laptop. If you wanted to add all that data on one network folder that can be done with Active Directory; but then you'd need your server to act as a domain controller.

2) Just stick with XP as your file server. XP comes with remote desktop; you just have to add the component. To access the configuration go to my computer properties and click on the remote tab.

3) Yes. Xeon processors make servers MMmmm MMmmm good

4) Yes. You can host a LAN party CS:S at home or run a remote server. Just make sure to know your public IP addess, port forward the service through your router and give out that IP address.

P.S. You are asking a lot here. Each of these question as been subjects of other threads so you should search for other threads before you post a new one. Takes a lot less time to read completed threads than to wait for answers on a new one.
