SLI on my 939 Toledo

Thread Starter
I am currently running an AMD 4200+ Toledo @ 2.42ghz along with an MSI 9600gt. Recently I took up BFG on their offer to trade in my AGP 6800gt for a new 9600gt...waiting for my card now...and was wondering if I would see any decent performance gains by running these 2 cards together in SLI given the age/speed of my processor. My mobo is an Asus a8n-sli which is 8x per slot in sli mode. Thanks for reading and I look forward to your responses.

If your resolution is above 1440x900 (1280x1024), then yes you will see pretty decent improvements. You will see even more-so if you can get that CPU to overclock higher .

Take a good look at my sig rig. I've got another 8800GT coming in for SLI, and I won't be regretting it one bit. There is absolutely nothing at all wrong with Socket 939, it is exactly the same as AM2 dual cores except the IMC is for DDR1, not DDR2.

I had an opty 165 clocked to 2.8 and it bottlenecked my single 8800gt, so I doubt it will be worth it to you to get a second card. I'd upgrade the core components first before going SLI.

On what, 3DMark06? Seriously what is so bad about a dual core AMD? Socket 939 and AM2 are exactly the same clock for clock (dual cores), other than what type of memory they handle. And my DDR1 can easily outbench DDR2-1000 @ 5-5-5-15. So I fail to see why that's even important if somebody already has a decent amount of DDR1.

Slow down there. I never said there was anything wrong with it, I just suggested there would be a bottleneck. It's something I encountered.

That's true, and the current AM2 dual cores overclocked to ~3ghz bottleneck sli'd 8800gt's as well.

While there might be SOME bottlenecking you will still get a noticable improvement in SLI. Run 3dmark03, which is almost purely video based not 06 which is heavily CPU based, you will almost double your score. With my GSO's it nearly doubled. And that was @ 2.8ghz. Even in 05 itll almost double. And in games I got a noticable FPS and quality improvement.

Cool thx for the info ya'll. I think I will give it a shot once my card comes in. I just got a new monitor which runs at 1900x1200 and I am guessing my 9600gt could use a buddy to help carry the load. This will be my first try with SLi so I am pretty eager to see how it performs.

It should perform quite well . Especially at that resolution, it becomes less CPU hungry and more GPU hungry. Hence why I said, if you're gaming above 1440x900, its definitely worth it . The lower your resolution, the more CPU dependant you become. The higher, the more GPU dependant you are.

haha I ran two g80 8800gts's 320mb in sli on my 754 rig with a single core venice clocked to 2.7 and I could play crysis demo at pretty high settings. So yes while there is a bottleneck you will see a noticeable improvement to your gaming experience.

Not to be pedantic here, but I'm not sure S754 had SLI, or that it had Venice cores available for it...

Back on topic, though, pioneerisloud is pioneerisrighton. At higher resolutions, SLI-ing mid-range cards makes more sense. Bottlenecks aren't truly relevant when we're talking about gaming performance at higher resolutions.
