SATA Connections not detecting *Update: NEW FINDINGS?*

Thread Starter
When I got home for break, I booted up my desktop only to find that three of my 5 drives are detecting (my 1TB hard drive and my DVD drive failing to detect).

Also, when booting, the "Detecting IDE drives" message on the BIOS screen takes a fair bit longer than it usually does (> 2 min). Afterwards, it starts up at a normal speed.

My mobo IDs the SATA ports by number, so here was my initial connection:
1: 500GB drive
2: DVD drive
3: 250GB drive
4: 1TB drive
5: empty
6: 80GB drive

I started trouleshooting by disconnecting the 500GB and the DVD drives, then connecting the DVD drive to SATA1, leaving the 500GB disconnected. Booted up, only detected the 250GB and 80GB drives.

Powered down, connected DVD to SATA2 and left 500GB disconnected. Booted up, detected 80GB, 250GB, and DVD drive. Vista ran a "new hardware" process and installed the drivers for my DVD drive.

Powered down, left DVD in SATA2 and connected the 500GB to SATA1 (original set-up), and detected 80/250/500 drives.

Tried again with DVD in SATA1 and 500GB in SATA2, detected 80/250/DVD.

I left those alone, moved my TB drive to SATA3, and left my 250GB disconnected. On this set-up, the IDE detection went normal speed (like a second). Detected 80/500/DVD.

This is absolutely baffling to me, as all of my drives were detecting fine when I was at school.

The only thing I can really think of as being an issue is that at home, I don't have the grounding plug for my outlets, so I need to use one of those adapters to connect my computer. Perhaps that is causing a lowered power draw for my computer, and it is only able to power three drives at a time, and there is some priority list I can't quite figure out?

Any input, please send it to my AIM/MSN/Yahoo names, as my internet access is having issues (already have another post about that if you can help as well).

Mehhhh.

Sounds like your RAID controller is crapping out on you. Might be time for an RMA...before Abit closes down.

Can I do it even though I've had this board for like a year?

The EXACT (well close) was happening to me. My sata dvd drive doesn't show up sometimes and when it doesn't bootup hampers on "Detecting IDE" drive for a bout half a minute.

I already RMA'd the drive so it wasn't that, so hopefully someone has some good insight for us cause i've yet to be able to fix it. Lately the drive shows up about 90% of the time though.

I also tried those combinations with my card reader connected or disconnected and it's had no effect...

Perhaps I will try to RMA the board, although it will be a pain to redo all the cabling and stuff :-/

(1) Check and make sure your PCI-E is not overclocked--lock it at 100MHz if possible (I only say this because the SATA interface runs off the pci-e bus, and overclocking the pci-e bus--at least by too much--will cause problems with sata devices).

(2) I'd try putting your OC settings back to stock and see if that has anything to do with it. Or you might need more volts to your FSB?

PCI-E is locked, has been since I've had the board.

And this is the same clock I've used forever, never ran into issues with the drives before until I got home. But I'll try resetting to stock clocks and see if that works.

Tried going back to stock clocks,

Upon reboot following the setting changes, I am greeted with a boot disc error. The first boot, on the BIOS screen I saw three drives listed, but I didn't get a quick enough look to find out which. Subsequent boots are skipping the BIOS screen alltogether.

I'm completely stumped now, and as it powers up straight into that screen asking me check the boot disc and press enter, I'm frustrated as well.

Hmm...when you went back to stock clocks, did you manually change the fsb/vcore/ram/multi's, or did you just use the "set all options to default" in the bios settings (I'm wondering if you had some custom boot device settings, or are using RAID, which might require sata devices to show up as ide depending on your controller/board)? That's the only think I could think of--or your HD boot list is out of order? Maybe your C (or OS) drive is no longer first on the HD list?

I can save settings to profiles, and I have one as "Factory" which is like, out of the box stock, and I also have a "Stock", where my FSB, voltages, and all that stuff are at default but everything else is tweaked. The "Stock" yielded the boot disc error. Since I couldn't access the profile selection, I used the CMOS reset button on my mobo, in effect doing the same thing as Factory. After that point, it booted up fine with three drives (80/250/500), regardless of what profile I use. Can't get more than that though.

So now here I sit, back at my overclock, with 80/250/500 drives detecting.

At least I've made /some/ progress with my internet issues...
