File sharing question +rep for solution

Thread Starter
I am trying to set up some files on a server that require a username an pass for each folder i need to set up.

for example if i need to set up 7 folders for 7 periods period 1, 2, 3, etc... and i want to make it so each folder requires a different name and pass for each of the 7 folders, it is a windows 2003 server and i was wondering how i should do this, from what i hear i have to make 7 users on the server, and there are about 30 computers on the network running win xp. if i could get step by step instructions i would really appreciate it.

thanks,
Jesse Stillwell

They are networked.

In order to lock the files to a user name and password they have to be tied to a user account.

How much do you know about setting up user accounts, and setting NTFS permissions?

why not just use a ftp server and lock them in the folder you want them in?
are these computers on a domain? if not you're probably better off using an ftp server.

edit: noobdown beat me to it.

I work as a tech in a small service shop but im not that great with servers and networking yet. I think i need to turn off simple file sharing to set some of the parameters. correct? it is on a domain.

If simple file sharing is on then yes you need to turn it off.
- what you need is to create a User account on the server for each of the user/passwords you need. This can be done as a local account or as a domain account.
- Then create your folders and go into the securities tab on the properties of each folder and add the user account that you want to allow to have access to that folder (including your own account or you will be locked out also).
- Create the share for that folder.

FYI...you can lock the folders down for the people accessing them by restricting their rights.

Trainsignal.com will help you get the beginning admin skills you need. If you don't know how to make a network folder with restricted user accounts, you shouldn't be playing around with a server in production; you can seriously F-things up and get fired.
