gtx 295 or gtx 260 sli...

Thread Starter
Ok, so I was wondering if it would be better to go ahead and buy a second gtx 260 216 for sli or waiting and stepping up to a gtx 295. I currently have a single gtx 260 but ever since I heard that the gtx 295 could quad sli I didn't know what to choose. I have a tri sli board (780i) so I think it would be a waste for using only two of them with the 295's. I was also wondering if the sli gtx 260's would be faster because of having separate pci express slots.

so...
1. should I get a second gtx 260 or step up to a gtx 295
2. is having two gtx 260's better because of separate pci slots
both options costing about the same

I know there aren't many benchmarks of the 295, none that i can find that compare gtx 260 sli to it, but I wanna know your thoughts

thanks

i prefer a single card setup over any dual anyday. my votes would go to step up to a gtx295; however, if your step up still cost more than getting antoher gtx260, and assuming you have sufficient power , id get the gtx260

If they cost the same then get the GTX295. It will be better because of the increased shader count. The GTX260 has 216 shaders and each gpu of the GTX295 has 240 shaders.

Get the 295. It's only about 2%-5% slower than two GTX 280's in SLI, and it runs neck and neck with the 4870 X2 (The 2GB Version).

Zoomer: The GTX295 is actually anywhere from 10%-25% faster than the 4870X2.

step up to the GTX 295(might be a $300+ step up though). If you are like me, then you actually have the gtx 260 with 192 stream processors.

The gtx295 will have a total of 480(240x2) stream processors, so in that sense it's almost like a gtx280 sandwhich with the ram of two gtx260's 1792mb(896x2).

It will theoretically(I have not seen any benchmarks comparing the two directly) beat the pants off of SLId Gtx260's.

I'm betting $550 at first. If ATI comes out with something soon that can cap it, then the price will drop a little. So if you paid $200 for your Gtx 260 from EVGa and you're doing the stepup it will cost $350 to upgrade.

Do you know if the step up applies to the evga price or the price that I purchased it at i got the 216 model. either way I think I can make it under $500 after the rebates from the 260
