PS3 Video Question

Thread Starter
I currently have a Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM that had HDMI inputs and a native resolution of 1920x1200.

Im thinking about getting a PS3 mainly for the blu-ray functionality, but I would like to know what kind of video settings the PS3 has.

The 2493HM does not support 1:1 pixel mapping, so the only thing it can do is either display a stretched image (vertical stretching) or an enlarged image (image gets enlarged so the vertical resolution fits the screen, but the edges get cut off).

My question is, will the PS3 output Game/DVD/Bluray video in a letterbox format so that there are black bars on the top and the bottom so the original resolution and aspect ratio are preserved?

blu-ray is in letterbox, and i think when i play socom its in letterbox too. i have a 42" panasonic plasma TV. it puts most blu-rays in 2.35:1 aspect. and it just depends on the video game really.

well all the setiings the ps3 has is 480P, 720P, 1080i, and 1080P. the only way to get letter box all the time on it is to use the regular composite cable.

oh yeah my bad, forgot to say the resolutions. if you want to force everything into 1080p res, u have to disable the 720p in your video settings. some upconverting looks ok, some of it is meh.

Depends on the movie. I've never seen a game run in lettbox on any of my HDTVs or my 24" LCD. Movies however, are a different story. For example, the Dark Knight bluray runs mostly in letterbox, but switches to full screen automatically during the Imax sequences.

the dark knight is the first movie i've ever saw that switched between 2.35:1 and 16:9. i thought it was pretty cool.

I've never seen a movie do that either. I thought it was pretty interesting. The Imax scenes are pretty amazing.
