Some questions and sugestion needed (Q6600)

Thread Starter
Hi there,

I want to oc my q6600 from stock 2.4Ghz to 3.4Ghz.
I have done some research already, but i just want to know a few things
before i get to work.. (correct my if i'm not right please ! )
  • My cpu can handle max temp of 80-85 with being around 30-50 is healthy..
  • I will buy Thermaltake BIG WATER 735, and some other small fan's (because of my gx2)
  • When your going to oc, do it in small steps, and "stress" test it between each time you turn it up a little.. (how? will crysis do ?)
  • i already oced (with asus ai oc) with stock air based cooler to 2.5Ghz but i'm not going higher without knowing exactly what i'm doing and without better cooling.
  • What about the voltage, i dont know anything about that jet, the only thing i know about that is that that can ruin your cpu if you do somthing very wrong...

So:
(2,5 Ghz > 280Mhz* > 1119Mhz**) with an multiplier of 9x
and i want to go to:
(3.4 Ghz > 377* > 1500Mhz**) with an multiplier of 9x

* being the Bus Speed
** being the Rated FSB

My system basics (it's more about temps and speed of gpu and cpu)
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2352/bvgsetupnc4.jpg

So... my pc is:
  • Intel Core 2 quad 2.4 ghz (now at 2.5)
  • 8GB (4x2) ddr2 GeiL 800Mhz (now at 900 or so, didnt unlinked them)
  • xfx 9800 gx2 black edition stock @ 700Mhz
  • Asus Striker Extreme 680i
  • Xp x64
  • Everything still air cooled, going to watercool my CPU..)

For checking everything inside of windows i use:
  • Cpuz
  • Gpuz
  • HWMonitor

Please give my tips for my situation and corect my if i'm wrong.
Thank you !
mypc

First off:
Maximum temperatures are 71C (not 80-85C) for the Q6600 G0
If that screenshot is without any CPU load, RESEAT YOUR CPU! that thing is nearly burning up at idle - scary what it might do at load

Cooling:

DO NOT purchase the Bigwater... too many disaster stories related to it, and it's not that great for the price... if you're going to go watercooling, buy each component individually! Don't skimp and get pre-made ones unless it's Swifttech (and even then, it would be wiser to purchase each part)... you'll regret the purchase once you learn more about watercooling and will regret it even more if it springs a leak

If you're not willing to invest the money into a proper water cooling kit, just get a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme, IFX-14, OCZ Vendetta 2 or other higher end air cooler...

Overclock:

For programs, you'll want HWmonitor for monitoring and Prime95 for stress testing (8-12 hours is considered stable)...

The actual overclocking:
1) Make sure you have the latest BIOS
2) Disable speedstep and C1E as they'll limit your overclock
3) Up your CPU voltage to 1.45, northbridge to 1.45, and FSB/VTT to 1.4
4) Keep your ram @ 700ish MHz 5-5-5-15 using dividers or unlinked - this will keep it from interfering while finding your maximum OC and you can set it to proper settings later
5) Go for 3.0, then 3.2, then 3.4, and finally 3.6 testing w/ prime95 each step... make sure temperatures stay below 71C

lol, that's what my temps looked like on my ASUS P5N32-E (Striker Extreme without the LCD on the BIOS, heh) and I hated it. That beast runs hotter than a hooker in a health clinic...

i'm happy that i didn't use any cpu intensive stuff pffiew...

what do you sugest then for water cooling?
i'm willing to spend some 150,- (€) on just the water cooling...
(as long it gets my cpu at 3,4Gnz stabel)

*edit*
Back on 2.4Ghz agian with 60on idle...

You don't need water to get 3.4GHz on a Q6600. A TRUE will do nicely, as will several other coolers.

okay, so :

1x Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme
2x Sharkoon Silent Eagle 1000

Like this setup

will do the trick of reaching the 3.4Ghz ??
