Xmas build for my grandmother

Thread Starter

Not done yet, still waiting on the power supply, speakers, OS, and screen.

Specs are

Foxconn 945G mATX mobo
Intel E1280 Pentium Dual 2.0ghz
2gb crucial ballistix ddr2 800
Intel GMA 950 graphics
250gb WD SATA hard drive
Memorex IDE dvd burner
Encore wirelessN wireless card
Acer 17'' Widescreen LCD monitor
Generic Logetech mouse, keyboard and speakers
Antec P182b mid tower

My question is, I have a spare zalman 9500, do you think it'd be worth it to try to overclock the CPU? also, if I should get her something more powerful than the integrated graphics? I was thinking maybe an HD4650 or something. I have the money but I wasnt sure if it'd be worth it for her or not.

Her main uses are basic internet, word processing, but she also rips/encodes/burns DVDs and designs websites on the side.

I think a very VERY basic GPU would be a good idea if your running vista.
Just something over Intel integrated will make a difference.

If you can overclock the CPU, go for it (if you have no use for the zalman).
you said she does some encoding, and that will make a difference

how much RAM are you using?

Since your Grandma is not a hard core gamer, and her most demanding use is ripping and encoding DVD's, the overclock of the CPU will give you the best results.
What a lucky Grandma she is

clicked on PCI-E x16 interface, then sorted by lowest price.

that would work fine, unless you have a spare GPU laying around you'll never use.

I have an old 8800GTS 512, pondering selling it, though I dont have any packaging or accessories, and it has an aftermarket cooler on it.

Haha, it was my first case, just sitting in my closet for the past few months. And I just might have to take you up on that offer

Haha, I dont want to risk her complaining about speed at all. She may be old, but she hits hard :c

Overclock the CPU. If nothing else it will give you something to say to people who are afraid to overclock their CPUs ("My grandmother runs an overclocked processor, come on!")
Awesome.

But yeah, even if you just kick it up a bit on stock volts (and make sure it's 100% stable of course) it would still proabbly feel a bit snappier, and that's always nice

It might be worth getting a cheap video card. And I mean pretty much anything that with keep Aero running smoothly. It does look quite nice and it's a decent option to have available. It all depends on the cost of a lower end card versus whether you think she would prefer the style or not.

Awesome present, by the way

Well, TheEddie and I have worked out a deal and I've purchased a 7300GS from him, so I think I'll be all set with the graphic card.

As for the CPU, I found that the zalman runs pretty loud, and I think she'd prefer to have the thing be as silent as possible, so I'm gonna see how far I can over clock the thing on the stock cooler if I reseat it with some IC 7 carat.
