4830 already bests out the 8800GT.

but rv740 is just as fast as it, but with a 128-bus.
Now that's an accomplishment.

So what happened to all of the info we saw about how we're not seeing 40nm till Q3 of next year? Is GDDR5 cheap enough to put it on mainstream cards already?

The first one was straight lies.

ATI was planning for Q1 production of 40nm chips, chips could be on sale as soon as the same quarter/Q2.

3.6Ghz GDDR5 is now rather cheap stock. That's probably why the 4870 512MB can drop $100USD in price since launch (due to both GDDR5 and maybe better yields)

But even if GDDR5 is not that cheap now, in the future (someday) it will be cheaper than 256-bit + GDDR3 + thick PCB.

Could use a replacement for my 3870, wonder if it will jump far enough ahead to justify it.

No, if i remember correctly its a 40nm RV730 with a 256bit bus instead of a 128bit bus

So its a 4670 with gddr5 (possibly, depending on if they use it on all cards or if its up to board partners) and 256bit memory bus, and on 40nm instead of 55nm which should do wonders for its performance and put it close to or equal with the 4830 in most things but without the need for any external power and with even lower heat or power requirements of the already amazingly low 4670, not to mention much higher clocks too

I was planning on grabbing a 4670 in the next few weeks but i'll wait for this to be released by xfx!

ATI are jumping to the next fabrication process (40nm) while Nvidia are just about to enter the previous fabrication process (55nm). I never saw this coming for Nvidia. Good for us
