[ABT]Catalyst 8.11 vs 8.12 Performance Mini-Review - Page 7

It's you.

All you people should stop installing half arsed unfinished beta drivers. Apart from the drivers being beta, so are the installation packages for them. Using unfinished/bugged installers is a big cause for leaving faulty stuff behind.

Versions not updated, registry keys not yet updated etc. etc which would cause trouble when finally installing release packages.

If you're so dearly on installing beta drivers, do it on a clean box that you can wipe after testing.

Well, I did install the 8.12 RC3's before the official 8.12's were released. Didn't have any problems with the 8.12 RC3 installation, but still noticed a drop in performance from the 8.11's. So I waited for the official 8.12's, removed the RC3 version and tried to install the official 8.12's. 8.12's took 3 installation attempts even after running the ati removal utility. Still had lousy performance in comparison to the 8.11's. Now, explain this to me--why is it that I was able to install the 8.11's just fine after the 8.12 RC3 beta's and official 8.12's, and the 8.11's give me better performance in comparison to the 8.12's that had the worst time installing, and gave crappy performance? Reverting back to 8.11 wasn't a problem at all, so this alleged fault on beta installations leaving crap around that screws up installations doesn't seem to have much weight. It's the official 8.12's that are the problem--how is it that with this release there are SO MANY people who have had problems with the installation, with getting CCC to run, with getting crossfire enabled if installation actually works, and with not seeing the performance that was promised? And yes, there are those people who did get them installed properly, and did see performance improvements--but it's not like a 99:1 ratio of proper installation:improper. It's more like 60:40 from what I could see on other forums (maybe higher in favor of proper).

I had a bit of trouble installing the first couple times. It kept installing 8.10 even though i downloaded 8.12
After the third try, and first "succesful" install, i got 8.12 installed right.

i think i might have posted this already but the sapphire site has some working 8.12's. they are the only version i could ever get to install properly. its worth a shot if any of you are having problems. i remember a couple hundred point jump in vantage. i cant remember exactly becuase i have OC'd the card since then.

Im running a Powercolor X1950 PRO in my server comp and im using 8.11 driver, having no problems with it at all so far. Even went from a nvidia 7300GT to the X1950. Also it is an AGP slot.

I had to reinstall Vista twice because of the 8.12s. Every ATI driver has worked flawlessly up till now. I'm not moving from 8.11 until ATI can own up and tell me straight up that they'll have one of their techs come down to my house and reinstall Vista if the 8.12 doesn't install right.
Not sure about Vista, but 8.12 is rock solid on XP. Not only the most stable, but the fastest too! 8.11 had two problems that 8.12 solves. a) If I change the memory speed so much as 1 mhz, when I play movies the screen flickers first as it resets to default speeds. b) This existed in prior driver versions as well, but in Call of Duty games I'd often have to reboot or Crossfire wouldn't kick in but after a fresh boot I saw a full 100% speed increase.... awesome! In 8.12, I put Catalyst AI to standard and very rarely have the same problem, but on advanced it works all the time.

One bug left is that after a fresh install of Windows, Crossfire does not work right with Call of Duty. Uninstall the driver, and reinstall the exact same version and I get a 100% framerate increase.
