Friend is having problems with 2600 XT X2

So a guy I know on a chat I go to(b.net) has an HP m7580n that he swapped with a 650W PSU, a Radeon 2600 XT X2 and the case. He says ever since he got the card a number of months ago(2 or 3) he always gets black screened less than 30 seconds into any game but Diablo 2. My first thought was faulty card, but apparently the card works perfectly fine in other computers.

So I thought maybe heat because he said the card was really hot in the smaller HP case, but he said it is cool to the touch with the new case and a big fan to cool it off. So my next guess is maybe the motherboard? It is an ASUS that originally came with a GeForce 7300, so the chipset is probably Nvidia.

Possibly the problem? What do you guys think? He is reformatting his computer right now from a bad virus he got that f'd up his OS and BIOS. He has XP Media Edition. He has the original card, the 7300, in it now as he reinstalls all the stuffs.

Any input is appreciated.

Nope... the motherboard's chipset (whether Intel or Nvidia) doesn't effect whether it works with ATI or Nvidia cards (just if it can SLI or Crossfire if it has 2 PCIe lanes)

The issue was probably with drivers... He might have forgotten to uninstall his ForceWare drivers before loading up with Catalyst... either that or he didn't forget but it bugged out during uninstall causing driver conflicts...

Either way, I'm 95% sure it was a driver problem assuming all the info you gave was correct (2600xt is functional in other computers, 2600xt isn't overheating, HP works with 7300 just fine)... if that's the case, the reformat and reinstalling of windows should help - Just be sure to tell him to not load any drivers for the 7300... just switch to the 2600xt before he starts installing anything aside from the OS

Feel free to PM me if you need anymore input as I don't make a point of revisiting threads I've already posted in

It does sound like a driver problem. Make sure all his old drivers are uninstalled, then reinstall the new ones.

Not sure if this applies or not.
But I once owned a Dell XPS600. It came with two 7800gtx cards. I got a deal on a couple of 7950GX2 cards and they wouldnt run. After doing some reading I learned that the bios I was using wouldnt work on the GX2 cards. I actually had to go back three bios revisions before they worked. Something to do with the bridge on the cards.

Could it be a bios issue here too?
Yes it's AMD.

It's probably a problem with Crossfire. Tell him to try disabling Crossfire and just run with one 2600XT, Diablo 2 is not that demanding anyways, one card should be sufficient.

Thanks for the responses fellas. I had also thought that drivers may have been the problem because I wasn't sure if he originally removed the nvidia ones and then installed the ati, but I made sure he was aware to do it in this order when he reformatted his computer.

Unfortunately I haven't seen him since that day so I can't tell you if everything went smooth or not. I'll keep in touch hopefully.
