Best overclocking CPU

Thread Starter
What is the best kind of CPU to overclock (AMD, Intel, other)? And if it is Intel, then please say what make and model is best, same for AMD etc.

Intel processors overclock really well, more than AMD's usually. One of the best Intel overclockers is the 2.4A Prescott that can hit about 4GHz with good cooling

From what i have seen, and experience with older ones. The AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2500 and 2600s were the best OC'rs as they could reach a high fsb and had an unlocked multi. Now It is the AMD Athlon 64 3700+ Newark core for s754 and People have been very successful with OCing their venice and San Diego core cpu's for s939

the intel dothan series of processors (Pentium M with dothan core) is a pretty good overclock.. although its not really the best for a beginner overclockers chip (not sure if thats what you are or not?).. its a little more complicated than overclocking some other processors (random fsb walls, overclock much further with clockgen than in bios, etc.)

but my dothan 730 stock speeds of 133x12 or 1.6ghz is overclocked to 241x11 right now and its completely stable on air.. have had it to 2.7 but not too stable. a 1ghz overclock on air is very good, and even better than getting 1ghz on a p4 because the dothan is much faster clock for clock compared to a p4

Getting intel is best for overclocking. Limit is alot higher than AMDs. And getting processors at low frquencies like 2.4 and crap like that is nonsense, cause you'll have to deal with the memory topping out cause you can't makea 2.4 run at 4.0 without alot of overhead room from the memory. Because crappy FSB:Memory ratio means no point in overclocking!!!!!

from what ive seen, id say the AMD 64 3000+ venice would be the best. it is 1.8 stock, and many people can get this chip to 2.7 ghz on air cooling. thats 900 mhz, and lets not forget about AMD's clocks, they do more per cycle than intels. a 2.7 ghz AMD is the same as a 4.05ghz intel. (AMD*9)/6 = intel speed. its about $150, and a 900mhz overclock on an amd is HUGE!

Good to see that we are getting more Dothan owners in here.

They are good overclockers I have gotten mine close to 2.8.

Obviously the AMD people will say AMD is the best overclocker, which is very wrong information. If you're asking how many MHz's you can get from a certain OC, intel wins, hands down. I've gotten both my 560J and my 561 to 4.230GHz. The 561 was prime stable.

while intel may get more mhz from an overclock, AMD get more performance
