QX6850 idles @ ~60C with stock HSF!! help

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I just mounted my cpu with the stock hsf that came with the CPU. Without any load the temp reading in COretemp in all four cores are ~60C.
I read somewhere that my cpu's safe temp cannot exceed 64C.
Is there something wrong that I did? Should I re-seat the HSF?

THanks..

Short answer: yes
Long answer: YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!

BTW, what sort of thermal paste did you use? That's the only issue I can think of aside from improper contact

try a re-seat and reapply some thermal paste ... remember to apply just a thin line of paste across the cpu and if that doesn't work .. then its time for a new HSF

I wouldn't be surprised if mid 40's idle will be the best the stock HSF can do.

That's enough reasoning for me to think there was a potential goof up the first time you tried... not criticizing you though - pushpins are a massive pain to deal with

BTW, you'll be wanting to upgrade your heatsink if you plan on overclocking that CPU at all.... look into the OCZ Vendetta 2 or Ximgatek HDT-S1283

And if pushpin installation keeps bothering you, here's a possible fix for it... my article was about the Xigmatek retention, but you can do the same with the stock heatsink

Stock hsf's are ALWAYS garbage and should only be used temporarily.

Agreed. But they are designed to cool the cpu at normal clocks which isnt the case here.
He obviously has something else going on besides just a crappy stock heatsink.
Yes it's AMD.
