Well slap my ass and call me sally. i7 920 @ 3.8GHz with HT disabled scores 5751 in the 3DMark06 CPU test:

Although, I'm sure if it were also 4GHz, it would match or surpass the P2... but still that's damn impressive assuming the P2 benchmark is legit.

Also, in real life usage, HT would still be enabled. It's not Intel's fault that its CPUs can execute two threads per core and AMD can't.

When I get back from work, I will try and get 4GHz with no HT and do another run. Oh, and I forgot to mention, for both of my tests, turbo mode is disabled. Again in real life, it would probably be enabled.

There's more to a PC than gaming though... If all you do is game then I guess this chip is good, but why not just upgrade your graphics card?

so decently but not as good?

So 940 = Q9980? (or whatever is 3ghz)

Well it is 1/2 the price.

its pretty obvious that even 45 core2 quads are better than this phenom ... and im not saying it because i like intel .. its because its the hard truth
if amd would have cpu's as good as intel's(or even better) i would probly be on the red team but since intel rulles the cpu lands ... u can see im using a core2 cpu

Pricerange vs Pricerange. I think what he is trying to say is that HT inflates the i7s scores, just as Physx inflates nVidias scores; most people turn off Physx when benchmarking because of this.

While the voltage DOES seem a little high for a 45nm part, I wonder why. Intel is using the same type of system as AMD now (mem controller on CPU) and is getting much lower voltages. Is this the result of SoI vs Hi-K? DuckyHo, we need you!

I think he was commenting on the fact that the performance (as reported via 3Dmark-06) would be inflated due to the processor having more threads available. He probably was saying when translated to a real world non media (that might use multithreading for their applications) circumstances, such as gaming, that these extra threads would not equate to increased performance in that app, multi tasking sure, but individual performance the 8 cores would not be that greater than the 4 core.

I agree that we need to compare the processors, but as logical intelligent beings we must be able to understand the discrepancies in scores if they arise and that no matter how powerful a chip is, most people, even in our tiny market segment too, look for performance for their dollar.

I love how everybody missed my second post showing the i7 w/o HT being beaten by the Phenom II, although with caveats, read the post.

But remember that HT doesn't only work on 3Dmark06. It was made for anything multi-task related, encoding, Photoshop, etc. If it performs better at all that, I don't see why it shouldn't improve it's score. If it didn't affect the score people would think it had the same performance.

Read this post, fanboy \\/\\/\\/

Phenom II beats the core 2 quads, and keeps up with i7.

Thanks for posting that. It's pretty impressive that the i7 keeps up even with HT disabled but I think it shows just how formidable of a gaming chip this is.

I mentioned encoding, didn't I?

i7 also KICKS THE CRAP out of Phenom II at folding/crunching, I guarantee it.

The fact of the matter is that I primarily game so I will make my decision based upon a CPU's performance in gaming.
