Overclock to help GTA4?

Thread Starter
Hello all, I have just got GTA and it plays ok when not much about (20-25fps) but as soon as there is alot of cars it dips to 15 and under 10 sometimes when it gets heated so annoying... My settings are everything on minimum and res at 1680x1050 (I tried 1280x800 and fps was bout the same, so indicates I am cpu bottlenecked?)

I was sure it was to do with my GPU not being that great but I have read GTA is a very cpu intensive game, so will I get a good rate increase from OCing my cpu? I'm not sure what Ghz I could get out of it? 2.8-3Ghz would be nice. BUt I havent OC'ed something for quite awhile so Im not sure what to do.

I dont even know my stock vcore as it changes all the time, so I left it on auto and tried to OC got to about 2.2 and it didnt boot and had to reset CMOS, thats as far as I've got...

Also do you think 4gb of ram would be good for the game too? I could pick some up if it could help or just save up for a better cpu/gpu?

Ty guys.

you could try to oc your cpu, it wont hurt your fps but i'm betting that if you picked up a 4850 or something then you would see a noticeable increase in fps.

Yep... GTA4 is very CPU and RAM relient

It uses over 3GB of ram on my system

I average 60+ FPS @1680x1050 on high settings

In all honesty you have a decent GPU, 2GB of RAM would help, and you can grab some for about $30, I'd go do that. Your GPU is NOT what's holding you back with GTA, there's no need to go out and spend 150 on a GPU when your GPU will run all modern games fine on medium/high settings (it has a nice OC on it)

Since GTA is CPU dependent, OCing your CPU will yield large gains. Raise your northbridge voltage by .2-.25 volts, and raise your CPU Vcore up to 1.35-1.4v. Also move up the FSB termination voltage, or VTT, to 1.35.

With those settings 3 Ghz should be attainable. Be sure to make sure your temps stay under 70 degrees.

Nice, does it run smooth in gameplay? Could do with 4 G's 2x2GB or 4x1GB (through adding)?

Thats what I thought, quite a cheap but powerful GPU for 1680x1050 unless you play the top 10% of hardcore games like Crysis.

Just had a look at intel spec finder says 73.2°C Thermal Spec so I'll try to stay below 70c for this run.

I will try to see how far I can get on stock volts (but set to 1.325, not auto) and then try the one you said.

Thanks guys.

So bad that R* expect people to have $1500+ rigs to play this game. I mean lets face it not all of us have Quads, 4GB RAM, and a GTX260 / 4870 to boot and that won't even max it tbh.

The game is incredibly CPU dependent. I hardly have a 1.5k rig, and I can play it perfectly fine maxed out.

I did benchmarks right when the game first came out and showed a ~20% boost in frames going from stock 2.4Ghz to 3.6Ghz on my quad. Going from dual to quad core boosts roughly 10-20% more on top of the added clocks.

$1200 then

But yeah a quad at 3.6 does sound good tbh. Worth getting these and sell my current 2gb.

Or add 2 more to my 2gb? Wont OC RAM as its too much hassle.

Yeah CPU wise I went from 3.6 to 4.1 and I got quite a bit of FPS jump and you should get a 2x2G set now because there like $25 MIR or $40.

Right back I just went and changed to 2.16GHz (240x9) @ 1.315v, although shows up at 1.275v in coreTemp, load 57ºC, 30 mins stable.

I played some GTA 4 and noticed small fps gains already (anywhere from 2 fps to 15 fps lol) only from 360 mhz OC

A little update.

I am at 2664Mhz (296x9) 1.335v (1.3v in cpu-z), VVT upto 1.23v, temps under load 67c, but my ram is running only at 715mhz as im on a divider. I'll need to be at 320FSB to hit 800 again. What do you all think?
