New budget build, your thoughts?

Thread Starter
So its been a few years since I have upgraded my PC, still rocking the Pentium D for christ sake, haha. So im looking into building a budget machine to get me into the new age without killing my pocket.

I am looking into the 750i FTW board ( I heard its an excellent overclocker) as I already have one 8800gt, and have my hands on another soon for very cheap so I need SLI. Also I game more than anything else on this machine so I was looking into either the E8500 or the Q6600. Both seem to be adequate processors, though Ive heard the Dual-cores are more for gaming and Quads more for video editing and things like that. Prices are similar ( ~40 bucks difference).

Since I was going SLI I was thinking about picking up some OCZ SLI ram as well. Only question is, since Ive been out of the computer world for a few years, and browsing across all these threads...Do you think these hardware options would be nice to bring me out of th stoneage without falling behind?

sounds like a well planned upgrade, but why specifically "ocz sli" ram?

Your ram doesn't have to be specific toward sli to be effective with it, any ram will work just fine.

No reason in particular I suppose, I just thought it would run better if I had a sli system...Though after a lot of thought since I don't upgrade all too often I think i am going to go with the q6600 as more and more games in the future would use the multiple cores. i think it would have a longer life

those " sli ready " kits are just there for marketing purposes and they oveerall dont make your computer any more special than regular kits. but lately, newegg's pricings on the 2x2 ocz kits, have been priced very well so if the prices are anywhere under 45$ or something, thats a steal.

The Q6600 is being discontinued soon and will more than likely be followed by a price drop.

Even the B3 model is an amazing chip with any decent aftermarket cooler; and the G0 stepping is just divine. For a budget PC, there is no better choice.

The SLI ram like the others have stated essentially does nothing extra. When I enabled it after a few days on my rig I can't say I can notice anything.. at all.

Why'd I buy it? 4gigs for $40, you're damn straight I bought it!

Oh really, the processor is being discontiuned. I'll have to keep an eye out for a price drop, probably after the xmas season, ya think? Also been looking hard as muskin, corsair dominators and the OCZ for ram choices..Ill see what I can come up with as a better deal when I look for a little price drop. They all seem to be 5-5-5-15 timings and 2.1V rating so its just a matter of preference Id assume. Also I think the 2x2GB kit would be sweet and make it have room to OC pretty easily. Thanks for the reassurance

Sli ready just means that nvidia has tested it with there SLi setup and approve of it, if all the ram on the market were to go under this test then like 98% would be "sli ready"

ocz makes really good memory and at really good prices but there are other brands id at least look at.

What is your budget for this build? I could try and work something up.

Directron is having a good deal on a 4gb Mushkin 1000 5-5-5-12 kit.
