IT'S ALIVE!!!! But it's sick :-(

Thread Starter
Okay so I just built a new computer (my first ever) and I was impressed, it booted up the first time I tried, here's what I got:

Intel core i7 920 (stock cooling... for now)
EVGA X58 Mobo
EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 896 MB Video Card
3 x 1 GB Corsair Dominator DDR3 1600 RAM
Western Digital 640 GB Hard Drive
Antec Earthwatts 650 Watt Powersupply (Don't worry, I'll get a better one if I ever SLI)
LG SATA DVD/CD Combo Lightscribe Burner
All in an Antec 900 case with stock fans
Windows XP 32 bit SP3

First of all, heat issues:
At this moment, all my case fans are set to high and my four cores are each hovering around 52C, 52C, 48C, 48C, with my CPU temp reported 37C (EVGA's E-LEET utility is telling me this) Considering my computer is essentially idling, this strikes me as kind of high. I know the stock cooler is garbage and I'm planning to buy an aftermarket as soon as I have the money, what kind of cooler should I get? I hear Thermalright and Zalman are good but Newegg doesn't seem to have any for the LGA 1366 slot. I also think I'm gonna buy the optional side fan to give my computer a little more circulation. Yesterday I ran Performance Test 6.1 and my computer scored around 1820 each time but the cores were all running from like 55C-70C during the test with a few of the cores hitting as high as 80C, this seems really bad... Any takes/advice?

RAM:
Okay so I know I have 3 gigs of RAM yet Windows says I only have 2, CCleaner agrees with Windows yet EVGA's overclocking utility says I have 3. Belarc adviser told me I have 2, yet it said that i have 3 of my 6 RAM slots filled with 1 gig sticks... What's going on? I've been told that 32 bit Windows only recognizes 4 gigs total memory but this should be a problem. I have 3 gigs of RAM and an 896 MB video card which adds up to less than 4, am I missing something important? Also, I flashed my bios so that I could run my RAM at 1600 but when I turned on my computer today it said my RAM was running at 1066 even though went into the bios and it says 1600. My bios also said I have some problem with my CPU speeds and my RAM speeds not cooperating...

Other than that my computer seems pretty solid. It runs everything pretty fast with my CPU load being pretty low. I'm really just worried about frying my processor. My computer doesn't seem to boot as fast as it should even though I set it to boot up with all 8 (logical) cores in the BOOT.INI thing, it boots in like 30 seconds which isn't a problem but my dad's 5 year old single core Pentium 4 computer boots at the same speed or slightly faster (around 25-30 seconds) Any takes?

Thanks alot

either a TT-120 or a tuniq tower 120 will suffice. OCZ freeze was also the thermal compound I use to use.

the reason a certain amount of memory is shown is because a 32-bit OS can only work with so much.

Plus, just because all your fans are 120 CFM doesnt mean anything when their direction causes them to work against one another. That and the fact that i7 is still new, so when it comes to getting temps from sensors accurately, it might take a bit for programs to work the kinks out.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention, I am already using OCZ freeze thermal compound with my stock cooler. I'll look into those coolers.

How can I determine if my fans are working together properly? I assume they are, the Antec 900 has good reviews about its fan cooling, my vid card could be blocking though...

Yeah I noticed that SpeedFan said my temps were a whole 10C lower than what EVGA's E-LEET is saying... so do you think I'm okay for now or do I have a dire problem?

About the fan air flow comment, as long as your fans aren't pushing air into each other from opposite directions like so... then it should be fine

fan -----> component <-----fan

Instead, make sure the fan does this

fan <------ component <------ fan

You should invest in a high static pressure fan for the aftermarket HSF if you want to get the most out of the HSF's cooling abilities. Many people tend to get the Kaze 3000 rpm fans, but they're pretty noisy so you might have to get a fan controller also.

Well, lets just say you had every single fan blowing into the case, then they are not going to do anything because no air is being removed out of the case, same with them all blowing out.

You just need to decide whats best for your base, my last one for example had my front fan pushing into the case, the back fan pushing out, and my cpu fan assisting by pushing air in the same direction as the other two.

Usually 32-bit systems detect at least up to 3GB of RAM. Windows XP always has for me, but it's always read different on different system specifications, and in your case, probably the same, being different.. That's all I can come up with.

To clear it up a little, Windows XP 32 bit recognizes roughly about 3.25 GB of memory out of the 4GB's. I don't think that's the problem here since you only have (3 x 1GB) sticks.

Also, your video card memory does not contribute to total RAM. It's entirely different, video card memory plays a more important role for gaming and other purposes.

So, basically you have 3 GB's of ram. Again, as someone mentioned in an earlier post i7 is pretty new, so it might take a bit to work out the kinks in some programs to recognize the hardware.

I'm pretty sure my fans are running fine, there are 2 intakes in the front with the bottom mounted Power Supply blowing up, then 2 outake, one on the top of the back and the big boy 200mm on the back of the top

Okay that makes sense. Thanks for the help everyone +Rep
