Ok Powder, let's see if this works. Here is my contribution to your soon to be addiction. What I changed was from Intel to AMD. The mobo I don't know about I just went for price but either way from what you got now to the two suggested systems will be light years apart.

AMD Build for $369

i'm gonna have to buy a monitor and hard drive i'm keeping my current computer in one piece. but i will salvage a disk drive along with the usb ports from my old dell. i have 2 disk drives one can burn only cds the other cds/dvds but is slower if i ever need to i can just use my 531 for dvds. that will be all i think i can salvage from it its about 4 years old. would the drive connectors still be useful? my budget would be about $500 max i can get the monitor later after everything else is all put together. i have a usb mouse and keyboard from my 531 cause i'm using wireless ones now.

ok i got the corsair atx80 for $51.26 free shipping from some computer store on ebay. i made sure and checked the model #. I also purchased the patriot memory cards from newegg. as far as the case goes is the rosewill a desirable case or will i be wanting a new one next time i have to upgrade? when its time to rebuild again i would like to have as many salvagable parts as possible. I found a dell 1708fp 17" monitor NIB free ship for $125 to buy or not to buy also found a dell 19" for 140 NIB free ship. i will also need a wireless pci card for my internet. I was looking at cases on new egg and i kinda want to get one of those that looks like a ufo with all the neon and windows whats a good one for a decent price? the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811146038 looks awesome hows that one?

and on the video card 256 or 512 most 512s ive looked at require directx10 and i'm not going to use vista. does xp have directx10? vista completley lost my disc drive once and i had to get on the phone w/customer support and let them access my pc to fix it, took about 2 hrs on the phone then when reinstalled roxio cd creator didnt recognize the drive was reinstalled had to reinstall roxio then it said i had uncompatable programs and i used the disc that came with the computer, another phone call another hour later my problem was finally resolved. Vista no thanks. May be a stupid noob question but do the memory chips ddr2 i bought have anything to do with the video cards and their gddr2 or gddr3 model numbers does the RAM on the mobo have to be compatable with the vid card?

The ram you plug into your motherboard and the ram on your graphics card are totally different. They have no relation.

The case you choose is pretty much all personal preference. If you like a shiny case that lights up and has chrome spinners, then I guess that's what's for you, however bear in mind 2 things: you probably won't be happy if you get stingy on a more important components (like cpu/gpu) just to have a prettier case, and also that not all cases fit all motherboards. You're going to want an "ATX" (not "Micro-ATX") motherboard if you need to plug all sorts of wireless cards and stuff in, so you need a case that supports the ATX form factor. Some cases only support the smaller micro-atx.

And this is just my personal opinion, but cases with lights and windows get annoying and distracting after a while, especially if you don't know how to turn off the lights. the rosewill case in the two wishlists we've posted isn't a looker, or very high quality, but I use a similar case, and as long as you aren't dragging your rig back and forth to LAN parties (probably not the case if you're unwilling to part computer from monitor) I think you'll be satisfied with it. But again, it's personal preference, so all up to you.

Also, if you're dragging a hard drive out of an old dell, make sure it's up to snuff. You want a drive that's at least 7200 rpm and has 8mb of cache or more. You can find this info by looking up the model number written on the drive.

As for the video card question, no card REQUIRES Directx10, but instead some SUPPORT it, meaning that with dx10 installed on your computer, and with a dx10 compatible card, you'll get shinier graphics. Past 256mb, the video memory isn't really going to matter that much to be honest. All recent mid-range or higher cards perform sufficiently.

I'm going to have to side with G-byte on this card:

Edit: This card's actually much better for just $20 more:

So the choice you have to make:

Intel:

I bought the amd phenom 8450 and the evga 512-p3-n975. the only issue i see is that on the reviews the evga card runs hot and the rosewill case only has one fan and a slot for 1 more i'd like to keep it as cool as possible. No i will not be using a dell hard drive, thats what burnt up in my old pc. i like the look of all the lights and stuff on the case but i was thinking before it might become annoying so a plain case would be fine i just dont want to burn something up. what about this rosewill case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811147105 i also like this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811226028

so which hard drive would you suggest
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148262
or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136039
i chose those two as opposed to the other ones because they had warranties and were pretty close by compairson. the western digital has 70 more gb but i doubt i will ever fill up 250 even if i put everything from my old pc on there which i'm not. i have the reinstallation disk for windows xp from my dell will it work or will i have to buy a new one?

I've always had better luck with WD than seagate... Never had a WD fail in 10 years, but had a couple seagates go bad (always under warranty, but it's still a hassle)... I'd pick the Western Digital.

As for the cases, one has a door that opens to the left, the other has a door that opens to the right. I'd pick whichever is more convenient for you.

However, don't forget... if you haven't bought one already, you still need a motherboard, or everything else is completely useless. This one looks good:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813135069
Or for a little more upgradeability:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128373

I'm a little sad you chose AMD. I'm an Intel fanboy, personally, and naturally believe Intel to be much better, but I think you'll be happy with the AMD regardless.

Oh, just saw the bit about the xp reinstall disk... sometimes OEM copies of windows (probably what dell uses) are permanently linked to the motherboard they're first installed on. If I were you, I'd somehow go about acquiring a new copy of windows, just to be safe, unless you don't mind spending another few days waiting to see if the re-install disk works on the new build first. (Keep in mind, even if the reinstall disk DOES work on the computer, you won't be able to use both computers on the internet at the same time, meaning one will either have to be powered down or disconnected from the network if you want to use both.)

Hiya powder and 711,

Great choices that you both are picking. I would go with an Antec case powder. But that Roswell has removable drive cages like my 900 and it might be better than this Antec 300 for a bit less cash and it also has two front case fans. Nice pick on the 9800gt, I think you will like it waaaaaay better than what you got now.

As for mobos the ones that 711 picked are good but they are also for ATI gpu's and you'll want a nvidia chipset. I personally like Asus boards and have used them in the last 6 builds for me and friends. This one (M3N72-D) will even allow you to sli two of them 9800gt's but it costs $131 w/rebate.

For hard drives, well they are all almost equal in my opinion and I think it is more so just a buyer's choice. I got all Seagates in this system and I have been buying them for the past 5 years, before that I bought Samsung. I've never had a problem with either so this one is up to you.
