We just learned from inside sources that developer Factor 5 has officially closed their doors as of today. That’s some pretty big news considering that those guys have been around for quite a while.

Real shame, factor 5 made the rogue squadron series

Wow. First Free Radical, now Factor 5.

Both of their recent releases were crappy games though. Lair and Haze didn't do well critically or commercially.

I was really looking forward to Haze pre-release too. The trailers were great.

This is probably good for the industry, it needs some pruning and shuffling to bump it around. I really think it's for the best.

I loved Rogue Squadron!!! Too bad that is the only type of game they know how to make. Lair was like rogue squadron with dragons. Lair should have done better. I never played it pre-patch though. Apparently the controls for it were horrid. Sad to see so many studios shut down. It looks like one flop and it kills studios. Games are just too friggin expensive to create nowadays. Even giants like EA have to close studios down. Ubisoft still looks like it is going strong though.

your right making a game isn't cheap... but it's not too much money that the studio's have to close down cause they can't afford it... When a company makes an engine then it's a totally different story. Bankruptcy i can see happen... especially in the end of the final stages of making an engine if it's crap and unstable.. your screwed.

For someone like me studying 3D animation, I can tell you that seeing studios closing their doors or getting mass layoffs everyday ISN'T boding well for the industry. Sure, maybe now they will focus on producing quality games, but that means that only top brass studios will be able to keep their jobs.

If one bad game means the end of your company, it won't feel good to work in that industry anymore...
